stubby43 aka Phil is a 25.42 year old boy, has been a member since December 22, 2006, has scored 3,809 submissions, giving an average score of 2.65, helping 191 designs get printed.
So since going to the meet up I've had an incredible amount of ideas but the short version is I have no idea how to excute them.

are there any guides on how to create designs? I'm thinking of starting simple with just one colour designs and building up from there but even that seems beyond me right now.

I just need to learn the basics.

any suggestions?

Just pick one program, one tool and master it. I suggest, Illustrator and the pen tool. It's so simple to get objects made with this tool.

Good luck.

The Pen tool is the easiest tool to use, but has a few different ways of being used, so to master it you just have to get used to the feel of it. No guides will do that part for you. It just comes with persistent practice.

You could try the following technique to begin;

Precise lines
Goto View - Show Grid
Goto View - Snap to Grid

Select the Pen Tool
1. Click on a point near or on to where the grid lines cross
2. Click and hold on a different part of the grid
3. Still holding down the mouse button move the mouse around and see the effect on the blue lines that mark what your line will look like if you let go off the mouse button.
4. Now do the same three steps, but holding down the Shift key at the same time as the mouse button. Holding the shift key means you restrict movement of the lines to 45º angles.

By unchecking Snap to Grid you can place handles anywhere on the a line path.

The main things to get used to are Handles and Paths. The Path is literally the line you create. The Handles are the little boxes at the ends of the line. You can add Handles to any path, by selecting the +pen tool and clicking on any part of the path. You manipulate the Handles using the Direct Selection Tool (The white filled arrow head).

I'll spam my blog again. There are other tutorial blogs around here too, just brows the Tips & Tricks section.

If you have CS4 or 5, check out the Blob Brush tool in Illustrator. I don't know how I lived without it before.
