Learning is hard, because I always want to jump the boring stuff and head into the stuff I find interesting and useful.

I'm trying to learn web design at the moment but its 280 pages in before they start talking about layouts, I dont want to learn how to make a link change colour when you hover over it.

I want to build an actual website.

I also realise that I need to learn the boring stuff first, I just dont want to.

I do this all the time, I have lots and lots of books but I can probably count on one hand how many I've read cover to cover.

I built a website 9 years ago. Don't ask me anything about it, I've blocked it out. I also wrote a crappy program. I seems like another life. I know what you mean. I prefer to just learn what I need.

Websites are hard!!!!! I spent forever designing one, just in CSS and XHTML, and I never got it looking right across all the browsers.

Also, in certain cases, sometimes it's better to just jump in way over your head and learn the basics as you discover you don't know them. Well, maybe not better, but more engaging?

I feel ya. I'm going through a CSS book right now. Luckily it's really good and informative so I'm not minding it too much. :)

I'm really not the best person to be teaching myself to do things, my learning difficulties veto that.

theres a course I want to go on, I told my parents about it but they basically said no, the only way i'll get to do it is if I prove I'm into this stuff and it'll be useful for my career but I find it difficult to learn on my own.

vicious circle.

I got my hands dirty for the first time ever with some real web design just this last summer. The best approach is probably to just starting doing it yourself right away, with the help of some tutorial sites like htmldog.com or some other site. If you have friends who know their stuff, even better.

But really, if you just start trying to build a website, you'll realize what you don't know and then that will spur you to try to find the answers to your questions.

Also, I used Coda. Hugely beneficial to have a program that helps out a little bit and has lots of reference materials built in. There's probably something similar out there for PC's if you don't use a Mac.

lol Alan.

Biotwist I know man, I got my degree in film but I'm not really interested in working in hollywood, I want to work for the new companies that are doing stuff on the net and eventually build my own company.

Learning webdesign would change my life.

p.s thanks man but you know what sucks? someone stole my shirt when i was doing a clothes wash at university.

hollywood STINKS!

and the way things are happening i wouldn't be surprised that in 10 years time scripted TV is a thing of the past. i hope not. but all signs are pointing that direction.

10 years time scripted TV is a thing of the past. i hope not. but all signs are pointing that direction.

I'm not exactly sure I got what you mean but if your suggesting that scripted programs are going to disapear I dont think they are.

Theres a growing movement of indie web series out there like Felica Days the guild and the dorm life (check it out on youtube, one of the best sitcoms I've seen online) and a few more I cant remember off the top of my head.

If your talking about them disapearing off tv then thats really tough to say, I know the situation in the UK will be different because the BBC has a remit to create british content and that means commisioning films and tv programs.

yeah totally different scenario in the UK than here. it's a free for all here. if there's no money producing scripted content then there will be no scripted shows end of story but hollywood will morph into something else. before tv hollywood was only films. then it was films and tv. now it's films tv and internet...
hollywood is like a bumblee bee not worried about producing anything but more interested in the honey.
