I know its the lone star state.

Also my sisters entire reason for picking texas is:

'I like the southern accent'

Thanks for doing the detective work guys.

Also I know nothing about Dallas, or Austin.

I'm trying to find out if she'll be there in time for south by southwest.

Rolf goes to TCU, and it's a good school!

SXSW is in March, so if she's thinking about going to school here in the spring semester, she'll be here for that. However, Dallas is ~3 north of Austin.

Also, haha, your sister might be disappointed with our accents in metropolitan parts of Texas. Most people in these parts have the standard American accent.

Sweet, well I did tell her that if she wants a sterotypical accent shes probably better going to the university of missisipi but I think she's decided shes going to tcu.

Is there alot of stuff to do in Fort Worth?

I go to TCU!!!!

Ok... wellll. firstly. TX is hot. It is a great school but there are some huge adjustments that anyone will have to get used to. The Greek life and socio-economic classes are very prevalent at TCU because most everyone comes from money there.

The cultural district is phenomenal with 7 different museums and the food is nommy all over. There is a zoo 2 blocks away (2nd best in the nation behind san diego) and botanic gardens, art festivals and rodeo and everything.

What is she studying? Will she have a car, etc etc etc?

I don't know much about the Dallas/Ft. Worth area since I'm not there too often, but it covers a huge area, and I don't think finding fun should be too hard. Lots of Texas bloggers live there, too. Rolf, Karen, Emily, and Kevin Brown are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

Rolf that sounds pretty awesome, she'll be studying psychology.

I doubt she'll have a car, its usually out of our price range to rent one, plus she's not that confident driving but I'm sure she'll make friends with people who have them.

I'm pretty sure my sister will be into all of those things you mentioned.

yeah there's halfway decent public transport between fort worth and dallas and TCU students all get free passes. If she's into sports at all, we get into all home games for free.

Cool beans, is there alot of stuff to do on campus? cause she'll be underage.

Ok... wellll. firstly. TX is hot.

Yeah, this is actually really important. A lot of people underestimate how hard it is to adjust to Texas weather, and it's not surprising to see lots of out-of-state students leave Texas after their first year because it's one of the factors that can either make you or break you here. Just something she should take into consideration.

   martiandrivein on Aug 19 '09 at 2:37pm
yeah there's a lot of organizations from church and christian stuff, to a bunch of different volunteer and interest groups. I'm only involved in design stuff, but there's a lot of on campus concerts and performances throughout the year from the drama, dance, music and art departments

I'm not actually sure what time of year my sis will be going, if its around christmas I'm guessing the heat will be less of a problem.

Rolf, your school sounds awesome.

yeah spring semester is much more tame, weather wise. In the winter, it gets chilly but rarely just freezing. in the summer it averages about 37-39 C though. so right now it's probably about 102F outside.

Winter months can get pretty cold (to me at least) anywhere from 4-15 C. Summers are brutal and usually around 37 C+. Spring and fall can be pretty mild, I guess. Texas is pretty dry too, so it's not humid that often.

Little sister here!

I haven't decided on where to go at all, I've only looked at half the websites of the places my uni has links with. (The accent thing was a joke! Well I do like the stereotypical accent but I'm not going to go to a uni based on that alone.)

Seriosuly I've no idea where to start with these. Anyone got any strong feelings on these ones:

University of Mississippi

Plattsburgh Campus-State University of New York

Lock Haven University (Pennsylvania)

Hope College (Holland, Michigan)

Indiana University of Pennsylvania

Texas Christian University

Ball State University (Muncie, Indiana)

Georgia State University

Wittenberg University (Springfield, Ohio)

...gah. No idea where to start...

TCU is great.... I can't speak for any of the others.

Mississippi and Indiana would be nothing to write home about.

You signed up Hannah!

If you do go to plattsburgh you'll be in new york state which puts you in traveling distance of alot of major tourist attractions.

Also have you told mum or dad that your thinking of doing an exchange?

should I avoid mentioning this?

Honestly, out of those, the only places I'd consider would be Texas or New York. Texas has a lot of personality, and while it is kinda isolated and stuck in the middle of the country, at least it's equal distance from either coast when you do decide to go somewhere...aka new york city or seattle or california or something. Or maybe I'm pulling that outta thin air.
