How am i supposed to write in an essay the only reason our film didnt get finished was because the editor dropped out of university, didnt tell anyone until a week before it was due it and not make it sound like I'm blaming it completely on them, when it was totally their fault?

Serriously we get marked down for blaming other people for our problems but the entire shoot was successful and the editor fucked us over.

How long was he supposed to be editing it before he told you?

P.S this isnt a retorical question, I actually need help phrasing it in a way where I imply its their fault diplomatically so I dont get marked down cause I've got nothing.

usually documenting whats gone wrong along with analysis of what could be done better and all that jazz can boost a mark

Unfortunately our editor let us down in the end. *blah blah blah* I actually blame myself, I should have been more attentive to the situation and where our editor was; emotionally and physically.

...something like that?

Thats basically what I'm doing at the moment, I've made alot of other points but right now I'm struggling with this one.

I think I'm just gonna have to go sit down and write till something useful comes out.

I think it should be ok to point out that the editor was the main problem, just don't blame the whole thing on him. Make sure you mention a bunch of things you could personally work on better next time.

that might work, thanks for the help.

One of the key points I have noted to ensure success for future projects is, to successfully maintain a healthy asmosphere within the group, and to make sure everyone is happy with the direction the work follows to ensure that similar otucomes can be avoided with future work

If it's someone's fault, say so. He failed, and let you guys get hit.

You don't have to tear the guy a new ass, but explaining what happened (he left and didn't do his task without telling us, you wouldn't have plausible time to find a new guy and edit it afterwards)

I am going to use both, to make an uber statment.

Ok thanks guys, this is what I came up with:

Whilst we’d run into problems during the production stage of ‘when she came to stay’ the process had largely ran smoothly, and the problems we did encounter were manageable.

Disappointingly, ‘When she came to stay’ was never completed because the editor left the project for personal reasons. Unfortunately due to the timing of her departure we were unable to find another editor to complete the film.

This experience taught me the value of fostering a healthy atmosphere by staying in regular contact with all members of the group. If we had been more attentive to the situation it may have been resolved earlier. Following this action may prevent similar outcomes future projects.

Explain what happened, and what you learned from it -- good stuff

Thats not true we just had some lousy ones on the two projects I worked on.

They were never serious about their job, they just picked it because they thought it would be the least amount of work not because they were interested (which is also why they picked their degree).

They were always going to be a waste of space.

haha, gotcha.

with editing, you either can sit in front of a monitor for hours on end and watch, rewatch, rewatch, and rewatch footage or you're not.

no grey area with that position

If we were in a professional enviroment it would of been fine because they would of been contracted to do it but it was school.

The first film was hard going I had no emotional attatchement to the idea, in fact I really didnt think it should of been green lit at all (its totally un sellable) but it was the only group left.

It was a silent film about a girl immigrating to the UK from India as she changes her culture, layered on top of that was the sound from interviews with a group of people from alot of different backgrounds talking about their experiences of life in the UK.

But because the director was trying to do both I dont think she did either story justice.

Watching the footage must of been boring.

Also after my experiences of being an assistant editor I know I couldnt do it as a career, I could edit my own stuff but I dont really enjoy it.

my wife has no idea about it

shes watching me and she asks "aren't you sick of watcing that same scene?"

i just laughed cos i could try and explain what i'm doing but it wouldn't matter.
