Three Keyboard Cat Moon - Threadless T-shirts, Nude No More

So I think its safe to say that three keyboard cat moon has divided the community because a lot of people have signed up just to give it a 5 but I'm pretty sure something far worse has started again.

I was looking through some of the accounts that had signed up specifically to vote on this design and atleast three of them had strange scores.

They all three of them wrote positive comments about the tee but had scores like this:

July 18, 2009, has scored 13 submissions, giving an average score of 0.38.

July 18, 2009, has scored 11 submissions, giving an average score of 0.73.

July 18, 2009, has scored 30 submissions, giving an average score of 0.20.

I havent linked to the profiles because as most of you know I have a track record of saying stupid stuff I dont mean, realising it then appologising so I wont link to them unless people say its ok to do so.

Just to make things clear, I dont in anyway think OXEN asked people to vote down designs, the tee shirt got internet popular very fast and some people have decided that voting other designs down would be a good idea.

well poop. I suppose this was a bad time to have a sub up for voting. :-(

there have always been people who downvote, or who vote 5 if they like a design and 0 if they don't.
Edword
   Edword on Jul 18 '09 at 11:57am
yeah that's bullshit if that's the case. I think a couple bad apples won't make a huge difference in less you see some designs end with like an extra 300 votes and they are all 0's.

like the internet cafe thing.

Alvin, me niether I just wish there was a way to fix the system that wouldnt damage it the only way I can think of is having a waiting period until your allowed to use your account but that would do more damage than good.

Stalliongsta, people probably have but it has become a bit of an issue recently because someone else did it.

I'm hoping its just those three, but I only found those people because they commented on the design, truth is we have no idea how many people have tried to vote down other designs.

This looks like sure print anyway judging from staff comments, too bad some people fell the need to try to guarantee it by giving out 0 to everyone else
inaudible
inaudible on Jul 18 '09 at 12:05pm
most people have a rather low voting average on the site -- it's kinda hard to extract a real average from 10-30 votes. 0 affects the average a lot more than 5, and i don't think there were enough people signed up to start any sort of downward trend in voting averages (in all honesty, most of the new members will probably just buy the shirt when it gets printed then never use the site again, unfortunately.)

I'm a tiny bit worried about this since one of mine is up for voting now and it was doing pretty good before 3 cats came and blew it out of the water, but the voting numbers don't really look off for me, maybe we should check some of the designs that were put up for voting at the same time, I think they should be at around 200 votes.

stubby43 on Jul 18 '09 at 12:09pm
inaudible, are you saying they might not have been voting shirts down or if they are its not going to make a significant difference?
Edword
   Edword on Jul 18 '09 at 12:13pm
I just check a random dozen or so designs that went up for voting around the same time and the numbers seem right, maybe even a lil low 100 - 170.

I think you are utterly ridiculous. I laugh at anyone who thinks that one sub or even some small faction of voters could create a conspiracy that affect the final out come of the other subs.

I said might for a reason, to be honnest I've never understood the voting statistic things and I dont think voters are creating a conspiracy to affect the outcome of other subs.

What I'm suggesting is that one or two (well in this case three) random people with no connection to each other decided that they'd vote other designs with lower scores.

There are flaws it that theory, the designs they voted on might well of deserved 0's which is why I havent outed anyone.

That was an abnormality, which the staff rectified.

I think people that worry about this kind of thing are just insecure about their design in the first place.

hahaha I don't care I'm just saying it happen, I don't think it's happening again, but now that it has happen sum may think oh shit here it comes again. The lower vote counts do make it easier to sway a score.

It didn't really matter anyway the staff took care of it, I'm confident they would do the same if it happen again.

I don't think there's anything unusual about this at all. I find it kind of silly to look at those stats and try to contrive some kind of intentions from those numbers. Like stalliongsta said, a lot of people just vote either a 5 or a 0, and there are a lot more 0's floating around then there are 5's on this site.

I looked at a lot of new users, (although not all, i have better things to do) and the majority of those I looked at had only voted 1 submission, giving an average score of 5.o What they do in the future is their own choice. I think your 3 anonymous examples above are not representative of the new voters at large, and are not evidence of massive voting irregularities (other than larger numbers).

What I'm afraid of is that the internet fame of this shirt will get it printed, and then whatever community helped to spawn all of the viral acclaim will get in their minds that they can control and sorta rig the voting here to get whatever shirt they want.

I thought this might be true.

But then I worked out what is really happening.

Threadless designs appeal to cool, classy people. 3KBCATMoon is the kind of thing that appeals to idiots. When a bunch of idiots show up to vote for a stupid design it stands to reason that they would find everything else which is targetted towards cool people shit and will not like it and will give it a low score.

The good thing is, after they score thirty designs and realise none of them have a keyboard cat in them, they get tired and fuck off back to digg where they'll nitpick Woss' "Shoot the Baddies" and quote Dwight Schrute and pretend they'll be the only survivors of the zombie apocalypse because of their intimate knowledge of Romero rip-off movies and not because they actually spend any time exercising or eating well.

mike bautista on Jul 19 '09 at 4:31am
I doubt this will be a big deal. If this does effect scores, it's not like Threadless will only be printing Three Keyboard Cat Moon. There are other slots for shirts to be printed. And low scores or not, there will still be designs higher than others, and better. They still have a huge history of unprinted designs to go back to, anyways.

*cough*
