This talk just blew my mind, basically the argument he makes is that our biology encourages us to have children at a younger age because it increases the likelyhood of us having children again.

This theory actually makes alot of sense, having children later in life is very new thing, before modern medicine child mortality was extremely high and the younger you are the more likely your going to be healthy enough to have a child and if that child dies you can just have more children.

That or they're just irresponsible dimwits.

did they really need a new study to come up with this theory? why else do girls physically mature in their teens if they weren't biologically/genetically ready to carry children?

=) i was one of those irresponsible dimwits

just because our biology encourages us doesn't mean it makes us stupid not to take birth control or at least use a condom

good point ginette.

I've also wondered what the difference is between 17 and 18 as far as becoming a legal adult. Like what happened when I turned 18 to suddenly make me so much more responsible and capable then when I was 17?

nothing. laws can be pretty arbitrary.

There's a dimwit and there's a dimwit. It's one thing for it to be an oops, it's another thing to do it on purpose. There are plenty of teenage girls that do it on purpose for not very good reasons. At least you were responsible about it, Tess. :)

i think what is more crap is that you can die for your country at 18, but can't have a drink- at least in america

Well according to his theory/the australian study having children later on in life is cultural so my guess is that it takes more effort to remember to take protection.

Please dont take it as I'm saying people who dont use protection are lazy because I'm not, but using protection isnt something thats built into us, say the need to breath, eath and drink our body doesnt remind us that we have to use a condom or in the case of girls take a pill.

lol Ginette thats what since is half the time, proving what we already know.

i forget about those girls- like i heard one girl got pregnant at 15 so her boyfriend would stay with her- i thought they were myths hahaha

well I guess if you look at it that way then yeah children later in life is a cultural thing. I mean if you think about back in the day the life expectancy was like what- late 40s early 50s? Now we are starting to live into our 90s and hundreds. So is that cultural- cuz i dunno how far we'd live if we never took our vaccinatins and all that crap.

Yeah, this seems pretty obvious to me. Not only does it increase the likelihood of having children again, it also increases the chances of the child surviving to reproductive age because the mother is more likely to be strong and healthy long enough to support it and protect it. Or at least that would have been true in our evolutionary history.

yeah Tess I think its also due to the fact that we have formal education now, where as thousands of years ago once boys and girls got to puberty they sort of had no other function left at home but to get married and start their own family. Nowadays your role isn't finished until you finish high school at 18 and can move out and do whatever the heck you want.

Well this was a part of a larger talk discussing the idea of wether or not humans are still evolving (I havent watched it), it maybe that our bodies adapt to having children later on in life (if we are still evolivng).

I dont think living longer is purely cultural because its a bioligical need to live, so in that sense our bodies are driving us to develop these technologies but it isnt natural that were living this long it is all human work to achieve it.

I've also seen talks that say our children/childrens children will be apart of a new type of human that is in control of our on evolution picking out the best genetic traits and replacing body parts with more advanced technology (e.g replacing eye balls with computers).

Were at a very strange stage of human history where everything we know is changing and its going to be pretty un predictable.

gah the point of 18yrs == adult law(s) aren't something magical happens between 17.99 and 18

it is about when the majority of individuals will be responsible enough (or dangerous enough =p) to be held fully accountable for their actions and choices.

now clearly some individuals would be ready much sooner and others you could change the law to say 40yrs old and they still wouldn't be ready.

i dunno if i consider us getting better technology as us evolving

or maybe im misunderstanding...

But research has shown that the lower a country sets its legal age the rates of teenage pregnancy drops.
