Things are looking pretty bad for labour, by friday there might be elections for a new labour leader or the goverment might get dissolved until we can elect a new goverment.

bbc article

Either way people are calling for Gordon Browns head.

Not much, I'm pretty sure the queen rules the country in the interim period until we elect a new goverment to take the old ones place.

Even if the goverment isnt disolved we will most likely have a new prime minister, I cant wait for him to be gone.

So everyone is quitting cause they were caught spending a lot of money? That's what I could gather from the article anyway.

Exactly, haha. Everyone in Congress spends money on stupid shit and they just deny it and then it's business as usual.

it probably sucks, but i actually find it kind of cool that the british government could just dissolve and they'll create a new one. that kind of stuff would never happen here. at least not without two years of an impeachment trial or something.

Yeah, it's actually kind of neat that your government seems to have the capacity to change. Ours is so bloated that you'd basically need to drop a nuke* on Capitol Hill in order to trigger a total reelection.

Technically our goverment dissolves every time we elect a new goverment, also the fact that our goverment can disolve at any time is a bad thing because the goverment thats in power usually calls an election when its too their advantage meaning their more likely to stay in power.

Also some of the claims were moronic, like moats.

The Canadian system is parliamentary, also, and there's always threat looming to dissolve the government. It's a pain in the ass, but it's amazing to watch when it all go down in flames.

Also, I love how - true to form - the Tories are claiming to have their moats cleaned and for duck islands whilst Labour are claiming for tv's from John Lewis and porn... haha
Krakaboom

The list of claims get worse and worse everytime you read them. MPs were claiming for computer equipment for their family, flats that their siblings were living in, lightbulbs, gardeners, mortgages that had already been fully paid off... one of them even claimed 5 pounds that they'd given to a charity.

The two most annoying things:

1) None of them are admitting guilt. They're insisting that what they did was well within the rules.

2) If WE were caught cheating on expense claims, we'd be fired, and possibly be facing criminal charges. These MPs are offering to step down, and will still be eligible for some jawdropping pension pots.

They're not all bad. But the ones that are, are unbelievably bad.

When I was in Malta, which was 2006, I would read the British papers and back then they were all calling for Tony Blair to resign (cos apparently he'd had long enough and it was Gordon's go now) and now they've realised they don't like him much either. My question really is isn't Britain due for an election by now anyway?
tracerbullet

mullmuggins
mullmuggins on Jun 03 '09 at 10:27am
haha, SJ - we last had one in 2005 and Gordon Brown has until next year to call one, which he won't do because he knows he would lose. It's so frustrating - he wasn't even voted in to power and now he won't leave!

Long over due, to be honnest the only people that wanted Gordon Brown in power was labour (and even then probably only a few people), the media just wanted a story.

We've never liked him, he's an un elected prime minister leading a party that we've been trying to get rid of, the problem is they've always managed to look like the lesser of two evils but thats changing now.

I'll probably vote conservative simply because they have the best chance of getting in power.
squatterjohn
squatterjohn on Jun 03 '09 at 10:31am
John Howard did that. Just held on to the bitter end cos he was going to lose. He really should've palmed it off to some smug underling to lose the election to the other smug guy we have now, maybe that's what Blair did. But we get an election every three years.

What I love about Britain, is how noone votes in elections or gives a crap about politics until everything goes tits up.

Im voting for our local independent candidate tomorrow. Im not voting for another political party until all the MPs who didnt claim any expenses get together.

It's compulsory for us to vote.
