Has anyone else heard about what happened Moldova (its a tiny eastner european country still under communist rule)?

Apparantly they were voting to elect the new goverment but the voting was rigged leaving the communists in power 'thousands of protesters took to the streets in response to the Twitter hashtag #pmanShort for "Piata Marii Adunari Nationale," the Romanian name for the biggest square in Moldova's capital of Chisinau' (wired)

It was mainly students but they burned down goverment property and stormed the Parliament.

Theres two interesting things about this:

One were probably going to see a revolution very soon

and two

The only organisation they did was through twitter, they were whats being called a self organising group where theres no leader in particular its just a couple of people put up that tag and then everyone 10,000 other people did it as well.

A Moldovan activist faces criminal charges for organizing demonstrations that were enabled by social networking tools like Twitter and Facebook.

wired article

This is insane, the social media tools we use everyday is actually being used to cause a revolution and it looks like the goverments pretty scared.

I think thats one of the greatest things about twitter, no one really knows what its used for, its a great way to stay in touch with friends, you can follow people you find interesting or it can be used for organising and watching trends.

twitter search shows you what everyone is talking about right at that moment in time, one of the amazing things about it is that twitter has been braking news before old media (e.g news papers, tv and radio) can, its not exactly organised but its quick and you get a general picture.

The internets awesome, Aled if your interested theres actually quite a few books written on how the internet transforms freedom, the best is probably the wealth of networks by Yochi Benkler (its a difficult read because its quite heavy on the acedemic language but worth it).
