it was not a a good enough story that deserved to have that much money thrown at that production. there were very few genuinely likeable characters for that type of movie.

The british officer was annoying because he felt more like a sterotype than a person but whatever, people were like that then.
from the time i saw the first trailer i got the impression the entire film was nothing but stereotypes and cliches. i don't know if i'll ever bother watching it. i don't especially like baz lurman films but he does make them look lavish. romeo and juliet looked great.
Anyone who was playing someone who wasnt an australian felt kind of like a sterotype even nicole kidmans character but once you got past that she actually carried the film very well.
The film is very well shot, it makes you realise just how beautiful australia is.
