"Screw threadless, I can't believe how many holier than thou and just downright harsh the community is over there. I'm all up for critiques and constructive critisim, but you post something for judgement and all you get is a 10 people clicking "Don't Submit" without a hint of letting you know why, that's just being a dick for being a dick sake.

I can't stand a community that doesn't offer you anything but elitist scumbags. Truth."

"I agree completely, except I think DBH is MUCH better than threadless. I don't even like threadless"

^^agreed, oftentimes I see the design and think it should just be sent straight into the trash. but do they listen when you say that? noooooo

Agree to disagree.

Not sure about DBH though considering there isn't a community there.

I can agree to disagree to an extent but come on does he really expect everyone to write comments on crits? most people are looking at a fair few crits and submissions and its only going to be worth our time to make a comment if we feel their going to improve.

Elitist scumbags is such the wrong term.

It's just as frustrating when you've gone and written a helpful critique, but the person ignores you. Or worse, gets angry when you've suggested their work is crap.

Not that I've been critiquing lately :P

I guess that's fair enough, but if someone's posting up garbage without the knowledge that they are, isn't it probably better to let them know?

Or are the theories true?

Threadless really could care less about your design.

As a matter of fact, I do expect to get a comment when I submit something for critique.

It is the idea after all...

To submit, and draw comments.

If I didn't give a damn I wouldn't have submitted it for the community to comment on in the first place.

I've been really lazy for a very long time, I've never commented on crits and I rarely vote. I stick around for the community.

I'd be more into voting if it effected me, but I'm pretty much always broke so buying tees isnt an option.

The problem is that I already have *tried* to basically tell someone that, unfortunately, they probably should start over from scratch. But they like to tell me that I don't know what I'm talking about or otherwise try to justify not doing a damn thing to their design. I'm all of a sudden reminded of our good friend LOKI...

Sometimes "Don't Submit" is the best advice you can give.
Neon Samurai
Neon Samurai on Nov 02 '08 at 1:54am

Or you get the "I'd like to see you design something".

No, you wouldn't, because I suck at it.

But I have a good eye and I can tell that this design sucks too.

I guess everyone wants a bit of feedback, whether good or bad. I know how utterly demoralising it can be to post a WIP and it's completely ignored.

I appreciate that sometimes a sub has no redeeming qualities, and you simply have no suggestions for rescuing it, but a 'do not submit' doesn't tell them why you hate it - only that you do. Is it ugly? Is it a crap idea? Do bear in mind that the artist probably thinks that his/her sub is OK, or even quite nice, so telling them to trash it without explaining why can be a little depressing.

I don't even use the crits section anymore.

I''ve tried that, it wears you down, it did it to me. I used to take time and give more crits, and sometimes tell them why they should just stop with a certain design and start working on something else, just 1 time I got angry responses (from the kid that made the "Fuck you" crit).

But it never ends, never. Drove me away from the critique section, I rarely go there anymore; I don't even like posting crits anymore.

stubby43 on Nov 02 '08 at 11:47pm
You also have to bear in mind that theres more crits and subs than there are people commenting on them, the fact is active bloggers are going to get more comments because they are active.

There making us aware they have a sub in existence, I'm not going to go looking for crits in the hope of finding something good but if you're going to show me something then I might vote or crit it.

I also tend to look at peoples work because I know they have a track record of producing something that I might want to wear.

Sounds rough Againstbound, would you say it's better just to submit and forego the whole critique process overall?
twoonebee
twoonebee on Nov 03 '08 at 1:50am
In all honesty, I know that 9/10 of my designs deserve casting back into the depths where they belong.

But I would really appreciate being told why.

I know you don't want to be harsh but unless I'm told I may think it's my design where it's actually i'm using an overused cliched idea. Or I may continue just making the same mistakes.

For some reason, when someone just clicks "Don't Submit" I take that a LOT more personally...
sonmi
   sonmi on Nov 03 '08 at 1:54am
i don't know if it's the case with anyone else, but whenever i click a "submit" or "don't submit" checkbox in critiques, i feel obliged to comment, whereas with submissions i might vote without commenting. i feel like it's mainly the lurkers who check those boxes without commenting, and thus you might never get a word out of them, as much as you'd hope..

I get what the person quoted is talking about in regards to critiques. Nobody worth listening to ever posts on them, and rarely do people give constructive comments. Its unfortunate.

I try to give advice when I have time, but I'm probably not one of the people worth listening to, haha.

i've read this comment on the emptees page of this design:

"threadless? but this is a good shirt."

well, it seems like it's always halloween there so, yeah.
twoonebee
twoonebee on Nov 03 '08 at 2:19am
I'd just like to say I'd never drive you away hector haha.

I know that the majority of people on here never make any criticism with real vitriol, so I take those seriously but know they're not personal. The nasty attacks usually come from users with no Designs or Blogs and don't actually know what they're talking about. But you can usually recognise those sorts so you can ignore them.

As to Elitist though, Threadless is made up of a lot of people who do this or are studying to do this for a living so of course there's going to be a certain standard. In my opinion, the site is built around community and a forum for talent and ingenuity, not giving hand-outs to people who just downloaded Photoshop.

It's this "elitism" that actually draws me to threadless, because I know that there are a lot of amazing designers here so if I ever get printed, I'll know I must have really deserved it... or it was just a really slow week :p
fatheed
   fatheed on Nov 03 '08 at 3:33am
This blog is misleading. It's one person who got burned on the crits.

Critiques can be harsh, I guess. I try to help people out where I can - but sometimes the only option is to suggest that they scrap it and start again.

Whenever I crit my stuff, I count the 'Don't Submit' votes as really valid feedback. If enough people don't like it and can't see a way to save the concept, then you probably should scrap it because the opinions of those people really count and will be reflected in the score.

Some things can't be improved and need to be forgotten about.

Gar0
   Gar0 on Nov 03 '08 at 3:43am
In my experience people who accuse others of elitism are generally trying to become part of that elite themselves. What stops them from becoming recognised at what they want to be is their inability to turn criticism - fair or unfair - into something positive.

Some people just can't handle their own crapness.
gumbolimbo

I rember feeling a bit invisible when I starte out here. Most people will experience some of that. It just takes a while.

As for harsh criticism: If you can't stand the heat stay out of the kitchen. I wish people critisized my WIPs harsher, not nicer, after all, wips are posted to learn something, no?
