Scientists Discover Fish in Act of Evolution in Africa’s Greatest Lake

In what could be a first in the world, a fish species known as cichlids has been observed by scientists in the act of splitting into two distinct species in Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest lake and one of the world’s biggest fresh water bodies.

This may be remarkable because what is causing them to diverge are adaptations to their vision as animals and plants try to cope with increased pollution and the effects of climate change. The change is also happening without geographical isolation, which was thought to be a precursor for evolution.

The fucking scientists did this. They're trying to cover up the truth.

is that evolution, or mutation?

don't evolution and mutation co-exist?

how else do you expect scientists to create mermaids malcolm?

I'm not sure, ginette. I feel like maybe it isn't completely agreed upon. but I could be wrong.

i mean, if you take thalidomide and your children are born without arms and legs, is that evolution?

no that's a mutation

but if that mutation is benefitial and those armless legless people start breeding (somehow?) then, i guess that's where evolution comes in, no?

so, we ignore all of the bad mutations and call them mutations, but if it's a good mutation it's evolution?
stubby43
stubby43 on Oct 07 '08 at 3:47pm
Ginette's pretty much right, but the other thing to take into account is that its happening across the speices, mutations are normally one off things but in the case of these fish its happening at the same time, in the same way across the board.

mermaids were found evolving in lake victoria? made of gelatin?

where do zebra cakes come into the equation?
ginetteginette

if it's benefitial to the survival of said species it is. i think. please don't take my word for it. this is just how i've always understood it/how it makes sense in my brainz.

mutation = one off

evolution = passed on

I don't believe that mutations can be considered evolution being that they are completely random and influenced by elements that have been recently introduced in to the environment, You don't mutate over millions of years.

You may have a fortunate mutation, or you may end up with something awkward like a penis on your forehead.

Evolution is a slow adaptive process that is always benefiting the organism and improving it's chances or survival.

I go get drunky now.

i guess i dunno what anything means.

we are in the same boat, ginette. we're floating around lake victoria. the fish are glowing.

mutation is a quantitative process

evolution is a qualitative concept

That's way too many fucking numbers. Anytime you have to introduce that amount of crazy numbers into your explanation to prove that you're right; it's a sure sign that you're wrong.

it's not evolution, it's just adaptation. If I decided to go live in a cave for the rest of my life, my eyes would adapt as well. Now if it starts to turn into a damn frog...then they've got somethin.

point taken opifan64...but i'll start believing in evolution when science produces a single legitimate transitional form in the fossil record.

a species is defined as two organisms that can reproduce, so zipper is right that it will only be an adaptation until the two fishes can no longer make offspring.

It's weird that they're adapting so quickly, though!

also, malcolm, you're right, except mutations are the cause of evolution. Those specific changes in DNA that happen during creation of an offspring sometimes lead, over time, to evolution. Not all the time, like you said, but sometimes!

evolotion is party due to survival of the fittest...if a mutation happens to be beneficial to a species and helps it survive, those genes that caused the mutation will most likely be passed on and become more frequent in future generations of the species. if not, the mutated freaks die off and nothing comes of it.
ISABOA
   ISABOA on Oct 07 '08 at 4:09pm
but what about the X gene?

Jellyes
   Jellyes on Oct 07 '08 at 4:10pm
but honestly, evolution won't ever 100% be proven by humans for a few million years. Chances are, our changing of the planet will cause species to change over long, long, long periods of time, but until that time we're just going to be able to pose it as a rational concept.

I don't get why they're trying to act like they can prove it with these fishes who can see a little better now:[

thanks ginette...but I have no problem with the evidence of a small horse becoming a big horse like they exampled. To me that is not "evolution". I was thinking more of the bacteria becoming a human type of evolution.
