Right so I just picked up a copy of spore but I've got but I've got a bit of a problem.

See my laptop is just under the minimum requirments to play the game, my tech friend thinks that it will probably still play but the only way to find out is to install it.

This is where the problem lies, if I install it I have to register the game online, my worry is that if I register it and it doesnt work will I be able to install it onto another computer?

My sister has a brand new laptop that will play it, but because were both off heading out (shes off to uni and i'm off to canada) I'm not exactly going to get the benifit out of it.

She said she'ds buy it off my if it works on her laptop but the whole registering online things got me worried that it'll block her.

Meaning I've wasted £35 and stuck with a useless disc.

(it cant be returned because you have to register online).

that game has ridiculously crippling DRM in it. you're only allowed to install it three times and you can only make one account.

read the reviews on amazon to see what's happening. people are giving the game one star as a protest, and rightly they should.

oh wow they've pissed off a hell of alot of people, do you think they'll actually change things or leave everyone to be angry?
tracerbullet

i don't know if they'll change anything, but there's a good chance this game will get pirated a lot more than it originally might have.

I imagine they will release a patch after the initial launch subsides

Its a real shame, the fact is their trying to fight pirating but the only people that suffer are the customers the real battle is the hearts and minds and this move is basically the oposiste.

game companies need to realize that you can't fight pirating. there will ALWAYS be a way around the security measures. if i were a game designer, i would just figure pirating into the sales projection and release a decent game without any DRM crap.

supposedly you can install on more than one pc

the DRM is bs however.

installing services / shell extensions... yeah FUCKING NEAT..

it is small wonder that PC gaming is getting it ass kicked by consoles when you figure the expense of a proper gaming rig and then the "joy" of DRM hobbled games.

meh... /rant mode off.

Its the same for all the media industries and there always hit hard by the net, the music industry was hit first because file sizes are small, now its film and tv the games industry will last alot longer using old methods of distribution because games keep getting bigger and you need a high speed net connection to download it.

I mean really everyone should be looking at the music industry because they tried everything they could think of to fight it and they've failed they need to stop devoting all their energy into fighting court cases and actually make music worth buying.

I'm worried the same thing will happen to the games industry.

yeah.... supposedly (I'm not the one to ask I have never cared for RTS games personally) the game play is somewhat "boring"

they probably will.

i just discovered today that i can no longer access penny arcade at work. that's very upsetting :-(

ya, i saw the AppDB description. Bronze rating isn't great. If there's ever a game I desperately wanna play, I'll probably just end up installing Windows on a partition and dual booting.

There haven't been many PC games catching my eye lately, though.

Is wine an operating system?

I'm not that up on my tech.

wine is a compatibility layer for linux distributions that lets you run windows programs

well sure Windows would help there tracer... I do however admire your boneheadedness persistence in building a game worthy pc and not dual booting windows in addition to Linux =p

   tracerbullet on Sep 12 '08 at 2:07pm
haha. i'll install windows when i need to. basically, once there's a game that i just have to play, there's nothing on windows i need at the moment. i've been enjoying ubuntu quite a lot.
