Is that written better?

Right now I'm doing some research for my dissertation, I cant really talk about it that much because I dont want to create a situation where I sway the voting but I need to know if you buy/rent DVD's or not.

If yes why?

If no why?

No- I usually get a dvd in the first place just because I am bored and a movie is a greate way to kill time. Why spend 10 -20 bucks every night when I can just go inside the red box and get a free movie rental every night
stubby43
stubby43 on Sep 05 '08 at 9:42am
The red box?
Malcolm Man
Malcolm Man on Sep 05 '08 at 9:42am
Yeah, it's usually cheaper to buy them.

I almost never return videos on time.

The only time I rent a DVD is if it's a new release or something.

I hardly ever rent new releases though.

i do, but only if they are rather cheap, otherwise ill try to find them among friends

Crap, now I have to re do the poll it was supposed to be about renting/buying versus downloading films.

Maybe the UK doesn't have redbox- they are dvd rental kiosk, where you rent a movie for 1 dollar a night, or use the promo code and get it for free

DLing movies sucks balls.

I don't understand how people can stand to watch a movie on their computer screen.
Gar0
   Gar0 on Sep 05 '08 at 9:45am
That sounds too progressive for us Brits. Though I'm sure there must be something like that in a posh part of town.
Tess Fondie
Tess Fondie on Sep 05 '08 at 9:47am
oh, lol- mine needs to be changed to a yes though. I like watching movies on my couch cuddled up with some popcorn and looking at my giant screen rather then on my tiny ass computer screen and getting bothered half way through with a stupid antivirus pop up or a reminder I need to update some software
Tess Fondie

lol garo- ours are at places like mcdonalds and walmart, totally posh

I'm beginning to realise just how broad even a simple topic of downloading versus's buying/renting is.

I download and stream video's all the time, if I'm downloading I'll stick the files onto my external hard drive that connects to a tv and watch it that way but most of the time I watch programs online in sites like youtube.

Streaming of course is very different to downloading because you never actually own a copy.

this question is giving me a headache because I realised that I do both.

Tess - most McDonalds in the UK have at least 1 Michelin star. It's quite a posh brand over here.

McDonalds might be quite posh in the UK if price is anything to go by. How many pounds does a Bic Mac cost?

I heard a Burger King combo was equivalent to almost $20US.

i have the netflix.

i rarely buy a dvd anymore these days.

we just got the redbox system in town,

i've yet to use it, but the free promo code is a nice incentive...

radiostaticstar on Sep 05 '08 at 10:01am
if i d/l a movie, i'll just burn it to disc instead of watching it on the puter.

our redboxes are in a handful of grocery stores...

Big Macs are £30, if you have a side order of Foie gras.

to clarify the reason I'm grouping renting and buying together is because it means you have a physical copy of the film instead of a copy on your computer.
Tess Fondie
Tess Fondie on Sep 05 '08 at 10:02am
radio- red box is nice as long as it actually has the movie you want to rent, the list is short, and its mostly new(er) releases, so if you want anything classic or just even a couple years old, might as well stick to netflix

I miss our local video rental shop/skuzzy arcade, StarLite. Downloading just can't recreate those sticky carpets and general fug of fag smoke.

stubby- I dunno how many people on the internet do it (I'm going to say quite more of a majority than you'd get asking around the street) But I know two people that have hooked up their computer to their TV, most people I think get confused enough by hooking up a DVD player.

Not to mention even if I did have that set up (my ex boyfriend did) I don't know where he downloaded from but it would take him 3 hours or more to download a movie. First off, I thought it was shit quality rather than him just going to get the dvd. Second, even if we went out to dinner, it still wasn't enough time to wait for the movie. I'm a spontaneous person, when I want something, its then and there not- oh, I can wait a few hours and still be in the mood

yeah, those titles available seem to be a lot of b movies & direct to video stuff...

i like my netflix, 5yrs now, way too much to leave it now...

as for the poll, i do both...

I buy and rent. I just recently got a Netflix account and am using that to watch all the TV on DVD shows. I usually use Netflix to sample, and then will go out and buy the set because I like owning DVDs. I buy movies less often, but that's because I don't go out to the movies very much.

I do occasionally stream and download anime that's only available in Japan, but I always buy what I watch once it's region 1 licensed because I believe in supporting the anime industry. Too many of the region 1 companies are having trouble right now. I do not believe in downloading anime that's already available here in the US; to me that is no better than stealing.

stubby43 on Sep 05 '08 at 10:40am
Tess I've heard of that set up before, one of my friends has it but the problem is he's watching it on a 42 inch tv.

The file sizes for download/stream are actually quite small which means that when you try to scale them up they loose quality.

Atleast thats the problem when people try to make the file sizes small enough so downloading and streaming is practical (quick).

If you want to watch someone in very high quality the file sizes are huge (I had hero's season 1 and 2 in extremely high quailty and it took 400gb up) so at the moment dvd's (including blu ray as dvd) are the only pratical options.

I get the feeling that this will stay the status quo for now but download speeds are getting alot faster and the tv/computer set ups could become standard in the next five years.

Kogepan that's actually a really interesting point, I'm kind of building up an argument that its actually to the advantage of studios to allow their products to be streamed and downloaded (re distributed on the net) because it encourages people to buy dvds.

but I'm having trouble putting it in my paper because there isnt much evidence out at the moment because this field is in its infancy.
radiostaticstar
radiostaticstar on Sep 05 '08 at 10:49am
depending upon how many are seeding the download, i can get most of what i download in just under 30 minutes give or take a little.

most of what i do d/l are things that aren't available for distribution here in the states. mostly tv shows, but there's a handful of movies as well...

If the streaming and downloading is legally done (as many anime companies are starting to do, and I think, but am not positive, that hulu is a legit site), then that's fine, and I'm all for that. I'm talking more about the hundreds of illegal downloading sites where people just go, "wheeeee, look at all this free stuff, you all are chumps for buying stuff" and then some anime company goes under because nobody is buying their product. That, I don't like. I also don't like it when my friends brag to me that they bought a DVD ripper and are ripping all their Netflix DVDs, because such blatant theft just bothers me.

I do agree that some kind of happy medium needs to be found, because people do not like blind buying, and rental stores just don't have everything. Legal streaming and downloading is a good way to do it, as long as they can find away to minimize abuse.

If I had the money to actually own the dvd I'm not sure if I would, I have a huge collection of dvds and I never actually watch them but when I'm watching stuff online its stuff i cant get in the UK.

as for small files and frame rates,

quite a few of my d/l's are watched on a 62 inch lcd.

if needed, i just use nero to make any adjustments needed,

and i have never had issues with pixalization and the such...
