I thought everything was sorted for my 4 month stay in canada working as an unpaid intern with a film company but I found out today that I need a work permit.

This is an absolute disaster, I have my plane tickets booked, accomodation sorted and I have no accomodation sorted for my uk uni.

If I dont get the work visa that means I'll of wasted £900, and have to commute 5 hours every single day.

agh.

5 hours one way or 5 hours both ways?

2 and a half hours one way so it adds up to about five hours.

ps five hours is an average guess because some times the journey is shorter.

Canadian Embassy in London. It's in Trafalgar Square.

Hope that helps.

mmh. \ : this may make you feel better: my HR rep has about that commute.

when I was in school I used to sleep some nights on a windowsill in this tall service stairwell that nobody used. it was a big, round, decorative window...very comfy. maybe you can find your own hidey-hole?

ha-cha-cha-cha-cha-cha?

Mate. I'm really sorry to hear that it's gone pear-shaped. Fingers crossed that it will get ironed out.

If the worst comes to worst... drown your sorrows at the London meet up. I'll buy you a drink.

Cheers mate.

Its stupid because the london embassy's phone system doesnt let you get through to a person and all it does is tell you to look at their website.

I'm also really worried that this will put off my employer from taking me on, stress is not fun.

Either way I've got a trip to london on the cards.

Bureaucracy is rubbish. But yeah, go direct to the embassy, making sure you have everything you need with you, and you should be able to sort things quickly and easily.

Isnt this something that your "employer" is supposed to help you with?

I dunno, I saw this online dont know if it will help at all.

canada work visa permit

this is a quote from that site "our employer must take the following steps before applying for a Canadian Work Visa:

Your employer must first confirm your position is suitable to apply for a Canadian Work Permit by making an application to Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC)

Your employer must then offer you the confirmed position

Your employer must then make an application to Citizenship and Immigration Canada for a Work Permit for Canada."

I just looked at proccessing times and it can take two days at the slowest and 28 days at the latest so in the worst case senario I still have plenty of time.

I just hope my employer will get the forms sorted in time.

That should be plenty of time - I had a quick look on their website and it looks like 6 weeks is about max... Good luck and if you need any help, I come free with Fatheed!
