Yup yup, the first set of route have been anonuced over in the route blog:

Check it out!

Right now we have places on a possible route five open with margolove, radiostaticstar and Tess Fondie! sweet.

I also announced a logo/banner design comp so go check that out right now!

Edit: Thanks to everyone who applied so far, but we need a full postage address (including post code) or else its not possible for people to post the camera to you.

Yup yup its back and this time its better than ever and were looking for super awesome people to take part.

For those of you who don’t know what Pic it forward is, it’s a group photography some of the threadless bloggers came up with about a year ago. The ideas fairly simple one person buys a disposable camera, takes a few photos then posts it onto the next person on the list, the next person gets the camera, takes a few photos and passes it on until it gets to the final person who gets the photos developed, printed and uploaded to the blog and flickr group for everyone to see.

Sounds like fun? Well were starting it up again and where looking for people to take part, want to join?

Its pretty simple just email:
--------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------
picitforward@gmail.com

User name
real name
address
willing to print
willing to buy a camera

in the subject put pic it forward, then put your threadless user name, this will make it easier for to work out who is who later.

Edit: Thanks to everyone who applied so far, but we need a full postage address (including post code) or else its not possible for people to post the camera to you.

------------------------------------------

For a route to work there are two extremely important roles, the person who buys the camera (we dont have a route if we dont have a camera) and the last person in the route, the person who prints them, please dont sign up to print if you think theres a chance you might not do it.

Now I’m not going to lie the first time we tried pic it forward it was a resounding failure (only one route was printed and it was never uploaded) but were fairly certain we’ve worked out what went wrong and how to fix it so were going to be making a few changes:

Shorter routes, last time it was ten people a route this time its going to be five.

Local routes , if a lot of you live on the east coast your route will only be on the east coast, its cheaper for you and it means the route will finish faster.

Were introducing team leaders! The leader of each route will be responsible for keeping their route going (with the support of the rest of the community) and make sure it does halt.

Anyone is welcome to apply to be a team leader but because of the nature of the role, we are only looking for dedicated people, the most active bloggers, and the most reliable/proven and awesome people.

Which brings us onto our next change, the newsletter this time around I’m we’ll be making much more of an effort to stay in touch and keep you all updated. We also might be launching some super secret projects later on so keep watching it.

And the final change?

Were turning this into an ongoing project, last time we took members then closed it and that was lame, so now:

We’ll be constantly making new routes

And

You can be in as many routes as you want.

We’ll try our best to help organise as many as possible.

picitforward@gmail.com

Remember:

User name
real name
address
willing to print

in the subject put pic it forward, then put your threadless user name, this will make it easier for to work out who is who later.

P.S

I’m seriously considering printing post cards and maybe a book and I want to know if you’d be interested? Because I’m broke it would have to be something you signed up for but we’d do that a lot closer to the time.

I might be, if we could organize it better like you said, so it won't be such a hot mess like last time.

I'm definitely interested. I love this kind of stuff, but it does suck if someone doesn't follow through and ruins it for everyone. I guess there's always a risk of that, no matter what, but it should be a group of people who are really dedicated to making it work.

Like I said the main problem with the project is how long it take to get the camera from its start to end, in an ideal world people would go out and take there photos and post it in the same week but that rarely happened, people were taking months to do it, people were forgetting to post it on and people were forgetting they'd agreed to be apart of it.

If we could get each camera done in a two to three month period it would be far more successful.

Yeah, people would have to commit to finishing their part in a specified period of time. I know for me, I'd be like, yay, my turn, my turn!!! And probably get mine done in 1 day...But I guess that's just me!

When we first started the project we said each person should have a week but the problem was that there was nothing to make them stick to that time frame.

Its a simple idea but its incredibly difficult to put into practice which is why I'd like to take time to really think about how to run it and discuss it with people a second outing is only going to be worth doing if we can increase the likelyhood of people completing the task.

If it fails this time around then I'll know the idea is dead and just give up on it.

I'm not really sure what we should do about the time frame each person gets with the camera. A week for each person would be nice but I don't think it's reasonable. Most people kept it for a couple of weeks at least. There should be 4-5 people per camera considering each camera got to about 4-5 people before it died. I think by limiting the number of people per camera, we have a better chance of getting the camera printed and posted.

Maybe have like team leaders with all the contact info of their team to make sure everything is running smoothly?

And make sure its a team leader that check threadless or their email often so it doesn't run too far behind?

Thanks for the interest everyone, I'm looking forward to getting it started again.

Tess, thats a really good idea and I agree midi a shorter route is alot better but if its any less than 4 there wont be enough variation in the photos.

I did have two idea that I wanted to discuss with people.

A news letter, I want to keep everyone up to date with each cameras progress but I was also thinking of including other things in it to make it more interesting like:

interviews with the members

running small photography competitions based on themes

My other idea is that we say from the outset that we intend to print a book (I was thinking of calling it a year book) there are pretty decent services that allow you to do it fairly cheaply (like blurb) and I think it would give everyone a bit of ownership over the work, it also means that people have something to focus on that they are working to something.

I'm not sure how much I would get into the newsletter. But thats just because I usually don't look at news letters.

I think the mini contests sound cool though, and I would definately dig buying a book with everyones pictures

stubby43
stubby43 on May 15 '08 at 6:53pm
right, um where to start?

The reason I want to add things to the project is to help keep peoples attention and I think a news letter is the best way to do it because its direct.

I dont want to change the idea, I think thats what special but adding to it isnt nessciarly changing it for the worse.

What I'd quite like to do that is different is instead of having people sign up at the start and then we close the project we have routes being formed all of the time, so if people want to join later we can accomodate them, people can be in more than one route and I wont feel as guilty about having just one route made up of proven members.

I would feel a little guilty about it because when it comes down to it the projects based on trust, people willingly give out their address to strangers who post it on to someone they've never met and I feel that if we exclude people then were kind of being hypocritcal.

but then of course the other side of me wants a camera to get printed and uploaded and the only real way to ensure this is by only putting trusted people in a route.

midi-chlorinated
midi-chlorinated on May 15 '08 at 10:41pm
I guess we could start by just asking who wants to do this. Maybe we can make a new email account for pic it forward. People will do as they did last time- give their real name, threadless username, address, and if they would be willing to buy a camera or post the pictures. We can then make the camera routes. I like the idea of this being an ongoing thing. A lot of people last time were left out when they didn't sign up in time. When more people sign up, we can add more routes.

I also like the idea of some type of newsletter. We need something to inform people of what's going on and like you said, keep their attention.

Raid71

maybe have a theme for each camera i.e. weather, home or fav object... that way people don't have to over complicate things or worry about ideas
Noobits
Noobits on May 16 '08 at 6:09am
true enough.
stubby43
stubby43 on May 16 '08 at 6:41am
Paid, thats deffiently an option, I think if that is put forward the people on the route will have to decide wether or not they want to do a theme.

I was also thinking of launching with a competition to design a banner/logo it I'd really like to have a well formatted news letter and an image to put in the blog.

If we did launch with a competition I'd need help getting prizes together.
chelly
chelly on May 16 '08 at 11:08am
well, i wasn't really all that serious saying that new people couldn't be mixed in with the trustworthy folks. mostly just feeling a bit sad at the last route i was in.

ongoing groups is a good idea. i still like the PIC IT FORWARD name. also, the general theme of "show us your world" because essentially we were doing this to learn about each other.

but maybe that's not it anymore.

What if everyone who wanted to be in on it donated $5 or $10 to the organizers to cover cameras and their effort for setting it up? People generally are more interested in things when they've invested something into it.

True, but then you have to look at the added cost of mailing the camera, which can make the investment pretty considerable for what's basically a blog lark. For me to send a camera to the US would cost at least $7.20, which is probably more than what the darned thing's worth......

stubby43
stubby43 on May 16 '08 at 6:23pm
Although asking people to donate money would make people more commited it would also dramatically decrease the amount of people who will take part, were already asking for a fairly large finacial commitment. Its just easier to get someone to buy the camera at the start of their route (probably a team leader) and have them post it on.

Another thing we could have is prizes to give out, for example the fastest route printed, would win a fairly large prize, we could make it into a bit of a race but the prize would need to be pretty decent and everyone would have to get something.
