Flickr just released 90 second shorts for pro members, I cant work out if its a good or a bad thing or who their aiming at, a 90 second video is extremely limited and the type of film the seem to be encoursaging really doesnt have mass market appeal, in fact it really only seems to appeal to friends and family.

Well thats crap, its a complete waste of time, I know there not competing with youtube but most of what youtube produces is a big pile of crap and takes forever to get to something decent.

i know, youtube is just a mess. i was hoping for more than 90 seconds w/ flickr...maybe they will do 90 to start and slowly add? dunno. prolly not for awhile at least.

I'm faily certain they will extend it, their aiming at slice of life videos, a.k.a the stuff you capture on the camera of a point and click or a camera phone but the features going to appeal to film makers because were the ones who are trained and will take up the technology first.

Anyway I actually want to see if its possible to make a good short film that lasts 90 seconds.

That's the spirit! Take it as a challenge. It will be the audiovisual equivalent to microblogging, sorta.

Yeah alot of these ones are uploaded by flickr staff (hence why its good quality).

I still think this is fatally flawed because their trying to create something that isnt a photo but its not a film, its extremely difficult to convey a story in three minutes 90 seconds is almost impossible.

It lends itself well to shots like that, but in terms of film making/tv shows they'd be called cut aways, something put into to suggest a location and atmosphere but ultimatly to brake up a program stopping it from being a one big lecture.

yeah its a neat idea but i think they are dramatically losing the battle to google/youtube even though their target is for personal videos, id probably still rather use vimeo to upload my camera phone beejays, since its free and has hd quality

Youtubes ok but it has a vast amount of problems surrounding, youtube is incredibly chaotic. Industry insiders are extremely worried about youtube whiping out traditional forms of television viewing but youtubes not going to be a threat until theres some sort of order to it.

Theres too much copy right infringement and too many videos that have extremely limited appeal, the majority of youtube videos only have appeal to friends and family.

Vimeo is alot better because its designed for film makers, I think the majority of people on vimeo use it as a portfolio site for film making but one of its problems is that the community aspect is far weaker than flickr.

Im worried that this flickr venture will go the way of youtube, it has the potential for alot of crap the only saving grace is that its limited to paying members.

I'm willing to bet that the porn producers on flickr will jump on this very, very quickly.
