I recently started work at jessops in york (the uk's largest camera retailer), Anyway if your thinking of buying an entry level digital slr, either go with the cannon eos 400D or buy a nikon d40 x.

Nikon have finally come out with the D60, the real replacement for the D40.

The D60 is about £100 more expensive than a D40x and you get very little for that money.

the only real improvements on the D40x are:

a sensor that dectects how close you face is to the view finder (so it turns off the LCD screen)

and a self cleaning sensor which means when you take a photo there wont be any dust on the picture

which is all well and good but if you maintain your camera well you shouldnt have a problem.

A Nikon d40x body only costs £391.95 but a nikon d60 costs £449.99

Thanks but I really wouldnt say it was entertaining, I hate my job but at least with slrs there are differences, point and clicks/digital compacts are almost exactly the same.

Drmtama2, honnestly when it comes to compacts there almost exactly the same and it depends on your budget, by next year almost all the point and clicks will be 10 mega pixels, infact we have one that's 12 megapixels but with point and clicks the chip they use to recieve the information is about the size of your thumb nail, which means after a certain point there just cramming too much info on the chip to make a difference.

Like I said it depends on your budget, thats a fairly decent camera, if I were looking for a digital point and click though, I'd be looking for something five times optical zoom.

could you suggest a brand or perhaps an exact model??? i don't really need many pixels i just need something that takes great pictures indoors and outdoors and that doesn't take forever to do so...

Like I said theres very little difference between the camera's but personally I'd go for the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS5, its 10 megapixels, 4x optical zoom uses rechargeable lithium batteries (meaning that its small and saves you money) and its shutter speed ranges from 1 second to 2000 of a second.

Its not out in the states yet but its recomended retail price is $250, which is a bargin, we sell the same camera for $400.

As for speed you'll be hard pressed to find a digital camera thats slow, that was a technology problem trying to get the camera to recive the info quickly but that problems gone, with all of them its a fraction of a second.

Honnestly I'm fairly certain that the d40x/d60 was a big cock up on nikons part, cannon set the release for the eos400D way ealier than Nikon had the D60 planned to come out, so the panicked took a D40 body, bought it up to 10 mega pixels but was still doing the research and developement for the D60. The D60 got too far along for them to scrap it so they released it anyway.

The D70 looks quite nice (had to google it) I do wonder how it would compare to a d40x/d60.

the 400d also has the face detection sensor. so the LCD does go black if you put it close to your face.

the 400d also has the self cleaning sensor... (which IMO makes life a little easier especially if you're new and don't know how to service a camera)...

Canon has also just released the 450d, which is supposed to be a model up from the 400d... hahha... I ain't got the reviews on that yet...

Sorry I'm bombarding your blog with Canon info Stubby...

Its not that its a bad camera, its a good one the problem is theres very little differences between it and a d40x.

If your looking for a camera with those features do what mela says and get a cannon 400D.
