Its a bit of a stupid question but its klind of important, I'm sending off resumes and covering letters to production companies right now but I'm struggling to do it.

I'm addressing a covering letter to someone called Lori kuffner but I dont know if shes married, its a formal letter so I really dont want to be matey.

Right now I have the start of my letter written as

Dear

Mrs Kuffner but it could be Miss Kuffner.

Is there a better way to write this? I really cant afford to mess this up.

you ALWAYS do Ms. if it's a woman, regardless of whether or not you know her marital status.

always.

if you were writing to a company sending a speculative resume and covering letter what would you write on the subject, I need something better than hi, but not something thats going to make them think oh its a resume I'm not going to read it.

put your name as the subject

because you are the subject... and it'll be easier for them to find when digging through emails

go for polite and succinct... so I guess formal but not stuffy

the subject should be the job you're applying for

Send a preliminary letter asking whether she's married or not.

Cheers guys.

Brain, I'm not actually applying for a particular job, its purely speculative trying to see if they have openings.

I'm really nervous doing this because this resume and covering letter will pretty much decide what I'm doing for the next year.
