truth be told, if my "electrics" went off and couldn't deploy my landing gear, I'd much rather miss the runway for the grass.

CHLOE RICHARDS, PASSENGER

"The plane came down quite quickly and it was quite bumpy. But we didn't realise it had crashed really until the oxygen masks came down."

She said there was no announcement on the aircraft and passengers did not know it had landed on the grass.

"It felt like it had gone slightly sideways, but it didn't particularly feel like a crash. We thought it had just been a bumpy landing, until the oxygen masks and parts of panelling came down off the plane.

"It came to a very very sudden stop. You're used to planes coming in quite slowly and having a bounce or two and gliding to a stop. But it was a very sharp stop and everyone jolted forwards and then the masks came down.

"Some people leapt straight out of their seats and ran to the exits and were told to sit down by the air stewardesses."

that's remarkable geewally, did you hear about the tsunami that killed a quarter of a million indonesians? nothing compared to two thousand americans i know, but still regretable.

lol @ the fact that the people on board had no idea and thought that it was just a particularly bumpy landing.

I had a meeting scheduled this morning with someone in our UK office, she said "I have to go, it's a traffic nightmare here and I can't stay for this meeting"

pretty impressive that a plane can fall out of the sky and sustain such minimal damage. i hope the A380s are as rugged, with so many more lives at stake on each one.
stubby43
stubby43 on Jan 17 '08 at 6:30pm
Well its impressive and it isnt, that plane is only 6 years old, its supposed to be one of the most advanced pasenger planes in the world and its power went off very late in the flight, I'm finding it particularly scary because the last few months I was traveling.

I went to the airport 18 times and 6 different airports.

Yikes!

Last week, an Airbus A319 hit some extreme turbulence while crossing the Rocky Mountains:

15 Seconds of Terror

Fingers were pointed at the Fly-by-Wire avionics, though now another passing aircraft is being blamed.

Damnation! What happened to only being scared of terrifying foot odour at the security gate?

Yeah, d3d, I heard about that. Funny how human crimes committed maliciously and purposefully against other humans are exactly the same as incidental natural catastrophes.

and which category does the unfortunate accident at heathrow fall under?
geewally
geewally on Jan 19 '08 at 2:22am
Under human error or malfunction of equipment made by human error.

so that's why it's more worth comparing to september 11 than the tsunami?

this is why im scared of air planes.

This is actually why airplanes feel so safe to me. There are thousands and thousands of accidents in cars every day, thousands die every day in collisions, and an airplane's wings fly off yet no one gets killed. I guess it's all how you look at it?

FA, you got a point. Back in the 70s a crazy man had a bomb in the airplane and set it off in the lavatory, and my uncle (more of a family friend really) flew the plane back to safety with only one wing. Pretty much everyone survived I believe.

I don't believe I specified where the diner was, BaronVonMonkey, but if you must know, it happened in Shitsville, New Jersey, right off the Turnpike.
