I've never heard of him apart from this song.

Have you ever seen the clip when he's at the Red Sox game, and he goes off on Mel Gibson, because the Sox's player was Jewish? That was pretty funny. Gibson made them take it down. What an idiot.

Dennis Leary is actually a very funny guy. That whole album "No Cure For Cancer" was a bright moment in the early 90's when his raging white man's pathos act really hit something, his manic smoke-infused bitter coffeee commentary really hit the spot and spoke a truth about how some people were really feeling at the time- pissed-off but with a purpose, as opposed to just pissed-off like most comedians are then and now without a point behind them. A lot of people shit on LEary, but between that album and the brilliant comedy "The Ref", I'm totally ok with the guy.

Yeah, maybe, he always seemed kinda like a poor man's hicks to me though.

I've heard that comparison a lot neon, and i think people only say that because Leary got so much more notoriety than Hicks did at the time. I feel Leary is much lighter and quite different than Hicks was, but i only heard Hicks many years after his death for the first time, so maybe i would have thought differently at the time if i woulda been comparing them side by side.

Yeah, I heard them the other way around (Hicks first Leary later). While they both seemed to be filled with a certain amount of caustic rage Leary seemed to be more pissed off with the trappings and fashions of the society he lived in but Hicks seemed to be more focused on the greed and lies that lay behind it.

I don't know, maybe I'm reading too much into comedy. I probably haven't seen enough Leary for it to be a fair comparison.

And I don't think that that's the only reason but I'll grant you that it may have contributed.

God I hate him. This song was the first I ever saw of him too, and that's where my slightly irrational hatred stemmed from.
