Today I spent $250 on a film camera.

I got a cannon A-E-1, a zoom lense and a wide angle lense and an auto winder (to be fair that came with the camera).

Granted its only £125, but:

I cant take it home as carry on luggage because I alredy have my laptop bag.

I cant really afford to take up film photography as a hobbie.

At the moment I have no way of developing prints.

I need to stop thinking short term, the reasons I bought it?

I'm going on a road trip to calgary and bought $40 worth of film.

I'm taking my portfolio photos there.

the people that rent out equipment and the darkroom are on strike.

Well the camera was $120 it was the lenses and the camera case that added cost.

The zoom lense and the wide angle lense were about $45 each and there pretty nice.

Well, it'll be good practice for you, and you can always sell it, or keep it until you can afford to develop prints regularly.

I do love my manual old school camera though.

The thing is what I got compare for a film camera vs what I'm going to get with my digital dont really compare.

My digitals going to cost $800 with one lense.

The digital cameras going to be my staple photography camera but I'll only be able to use my film camera every now and again so I'll have to work harder on my photos (because in the end its kind of an expensive hobbie).

Sounds like you're made of money.

I was thinking of keeping it until I can afford to develop prints regularly, which in practice means when I'm out of uni.

The good thing is it means I'm now committed to film photography.

I wish, atcually I'm getting a nikon d40 x as a christmas/birthday/ 21st birthday present.

The only reason I could afford this camera is because I worked 7 days a week over the summer (5 days a week 8 hours a day in factory, then half days in whsmiths) and exchange rates.

I know.

Still this is the most reckless thing i've done since going to the mish mash, which when you think about it was pretty stupid.

I skipped a class to fly out from regina (for about 10 hours) to go meet people I met off the internet, not only did I meet them I stayed in a hotel with them for 4 days. why did I go? because everyone else was.

But it end up being a great descision, so i'm hoping the camera turns out the same.

That's a lot of camera for $250, you gotta admit. Here's to digital -- it's making a lot of used good-quality film gear really affordable.

I have a Canon AE-1P (which I received new, as a gift, many moons ago) and the lens had accumulated some grot which was showing up on the negs. I took the lens in for cleaning, and was quoted $125. Or I could buy a perfectly good used lens for $50. Gee, no-brainer.

I need to get a zoom lens, though. I'm kinda scared of walking into camera stores, though......
