I started a photography class last month and today I developed film for the first time and my film ended up with nothing on it.

I'm digital all the way, film is alot of work.

------

I got a camera out this morning and managed to get my photos done and developed I'm chuffed, just got to get them onto photo paper tommorow and I'm sorted.

there's plenty you can do with film that you can't, with digital.

it's worth another go.

i'm sure you know this, but you still have to turn off the light when handling the raw negatives... you know, reeling it up and all.

Yeah but I was developing them in light tight tanks so I dont understand why it didnt develop espicially when I did it with two other people and theres worked.

sounds like it wasn't loaded into the camera correctly. give it another shot, i bet you'll be fine

i was always a digital guy myself when i took a b/w photo class. i loved it and i love all my prints (print as much as you can!), but it was a pain in the butt.

i developed film in middle school and really enjoyed it

it makes me sad that even though i didnt do journalism in high school

that after my class graduated they got rid of my high school's dark room and didnt even put on into the new highschool they built

Well thats the thing the numbers developed but there were no images on it, but it then I've got one square thats over exposed.

I'll like it when it works its just that the projects due on thursday night so its a rush.

I really want to take a photo class next semester, but I'm a wee bit scared because I've heard they're really hard.

So you made one mistake, suffered one setback and now you're just going to pack it in? That's no way to live, Stubby my friend. Everyone messes up on film once. It's good to get it out of the way early.

Film is good, man. No, film is great. It's chemical, like you and me. It changes it's nature due to it's surroundings, it goes wrong, it gets emotional, it screws up. Digital is a binary response to light, it's soulless, it has no funk. Hear my plea, and sod off digital for a little while.

If the numbers showed up and there's nothing on the film it mean you developed it properly, but there was nothing shot onto the film. Where was the over exposed frame? If it was at the end of the film, the chances are the sprockets didn't catch the film and nothing went throught the camera.

yeh, what tont said! the satisfaction and accomplishment you get when you develop your own film is so cool, don't give up. give film a chance!

I only use digital because of it's ease. If I had time and decent facilities at home, I'd probably use film more often.

Don't let one setback put you off. It's ultimately more rewarding developing a quality set of photos yourself, knowing they look that way because of everything you did, rather than a machine.

You can get good at most things with practise Jebbie. Although some people obviously have natural talent in certain areas. Me, I'm naturally a red hot lover.

Try it again!

I wish I still had access to a darkroom. It sounds like you didn't load the film properly in the camera. No big deal. What kind of camera are you using? With mine, when you advance the film after you load it, you can tell if it's in right because the counter will go up.

Well I found out why it didnt work, turns out I didnt load the film properly so it didnt expose.

Now that I'm getting the hang of it I'm starting to enjoy it, dont get me wrong this is one the hardest days I've ever done (5 hour class and having to get these photos re shot, then I'm starting developing at 8pm.

I'm using a pentax k 1000.

Tonteau I love your passion, I think I'll feel better when I actually get good photos and get them printed but I like digital because its instant and you have alot more control over it. With film theres always that what if, some people find it exciting personally I find it scary.

Yeah, that was pretty much my diagnosis above. Easy mistake to make, but unlikely you'll do it again.

Just roll with the film for a while. It's got a quality no amount of photoshop filters can replicate.

you'll get it!

I'm in AP Photo this year at school, and at first photo with film may seem challenging, and the process takes to long, but it feels so much cooler when you've made a sweet print

thats the problem with film though, if youve got a deadline, and your film doesnt come out...its a blower.

Ironically, all the chatter in these here blogs is what inspired me to get out my SLR once again....sadly neglected for 30 months or so.

Digital is awesome for snapshots. But for capturing the rich visual world I inhabit, film's been the best.

i want to hug tonteau because of his film defending up above. it was well-said.

anyway, it looks like it was diagnosed already, but i was going to say your film probably didn't catch when you were first loading it, and so it never was developed at all.

Hah... the first time I used film I opened it before it was developed and it turned out blank.

It was such a waste.
