stubby43 aka Phil is a 25.42 year old boy, has been a member since December 22, 2006, has scored 3,809 submissions, giving an average score of 2.65, helping 191 designs get printed.
It seemed like they turned up out of no where and all had accounts with baron on it.

Are they blog members who set up a group kind of like the black rock?

or an existing group that joined threadless or am I way off?

Because we all needed a little more exclusivity and factions around here.

I was amused at first, but not since I've seen how some of them have responded to others on the blogs who wanted to join.

Ah ok, I've seen some of the work and to be perfectly honnest the barrons stuff isnt all that great.

oh fiddlesticks

lemme just admit here that I'm a baron... it was all started as a fun little way of submitting group themed subs. We never really planned on participating in blogs, and we werent really expecting people to create their own accounts proclaiming themslevves as barons. Because of all the mass emails we send to each other regarding themes and all that hootananny... we just wanted to keep the group to a minumum. And the whole Baron vs Alumni thing was another factor in us deciding to stay at our current number. It has nothing to do with exclusion or division. Some people may have responded harshly, but you cant control other's responses. We're all regular bloggers.

ladykat on Sep 27 '07 at 3:19pm
Like all the stuff submitted on Threadless, some of it's good, some not.

They'll probably be held to different standards just because they've labeled themselves as a group of designers - which can lead to either people seeing the mediocre stuff as good because they expect it to be good, or to see the good stuff as mediocre because their standards have been artificially inflated.

Alas, the tricky part about forming a clique is that individual responses start to be seen as responses on behalf of the group.

I stayed far away from that most of the time because it just raised the feeling of cliquishness and exclusivity around here.

I did, however, respond to individual blogs pimping individual subs here and there, when the subs were decent.

Whether the work is good or not is not the point and a comment that is not necessary. I am a baron and proud of my subs, whether they do well or not. Folks have been e-mailing us to join just to make fun of us and we are really friends who support each other and take turns doing work we love.

This Black Bastard thing and other fake ID's is perfect example of why we just want to submit work and enjoy each other's company.

so what canadianbeaver is saying... they think their farts dont stink and so they want to stay in a giant enclosed room where they can smell eachothers farts and if anyone else even comes into the room it automatically smells worse then their collective farts

honestly I have no idea what to say to defend us... it was all made in good fun. I wish we wouldve just stayed out of the blogs completely... cause the whole reason we did this was to just have fun creating themed subs. Other people have done it, so we wanted to do it too. I dont see what's wrong with that.

All this bad feeling towards 'secret' groups is ridiculous.

I'm not a Baron, but anyone here is capable of organising a group, secret or otherwise, and it's unfeasible for any group to be able to accept everyone into it.

I like what they've done.

They'll probably be held to different standards just because they've labeled themselves as a group of designers - which can lead to either people seeing the mediocre stuff as good because they expect it to be good, or to see the good stuff as mediocre because their standards have been artificially inflated.

I think that's bullshit.

not letting in someone that has the same interests and is wanting to be appart of the fun and themed subs is just weak. dats whats wrong wit dat

ladykat
ladykat on Sep 27 '07 at 3:33pm
It doesn't seem to cause as much trouble when groups stay off the blogs, because then it's not rubbed in people's faces as much that they can't join.

That was my issue with the Alumni Club - and the reason why the Black Rock group never bugged me as much.

As I said, I enjoyed the barons until they made it clear they were excluding others too.

why do you think we formed our group? There were others before us. We werent included. Did we get all pissed and damn them? No, we formed our own group. Which, as Bramish pointed out, anyone is capable of doing on their own.

And although our presence in the blogs wasnt necessary, when we did post, it was generally just us goofing off. I guess the barrage of fake baron accounts that were created to make fun of us is what was so off putting.

A bit of both really ladykat. I for one set no standards for any designer. Take kennnnn for example. I generally love his stuff, but if I score it accordingly. Mediocres tuff is mediocre, regardless of who made it.

whether you like it or not, creating a club (that's what it is) within a community that already exists is a means of excluding people, regardless of if you talk about it on the blogs or not.

alumni, black mountain, barons and all the groups that will follow....you carry w/ you a bad stink.

i want no part of it and will do my best to avoid all "societies w/in societies" at all costs.

so I guess it is naive

the kinda ignorance that you can only get from folks who have more good intentions than foresight

to think that something for yuks and fun - would not end up being a big fat pain in the ass. And interpreted by others - who apply their own sophisticated expectations and assessments - in a way so far from the mark - that those previously naive folks have been schooled - left more informed and annoyed and disappointed - in the assumptions made

alas - this is a strange strange place
