Ok I'm in canada until the 21st of december when I have to fly home and even though I want to come back to canada and the states I have to treat it as a once in a life time thing.

So I was thinking of having two more blogger meet ups (though one of them my american friends will be attending) but I'm trying to work out how to do it.

I'm thinking of flying from regina sakatechwan on the 15th of december (my last exam is on the 14th) to New york city where'd I'd really love to meet up with the new york bloggers, but at the very least my friends I made on exchange last time will be driving up to the city to meet me.

I want to spend a couple of days there but then I want/need to go to toronto. I'm flying out of torotonto on the 21st of december and I'd actually like to see more of the city instead of the airport (I've been in it twice and all I can say is its less confusing than o'hare) and I noticed theres quite a few bloggers in toronto and I'd really like to meet up and see the city before I leave.

I'm just throwing it out there but I was wondering what would be the best way to do it, I was thinking of flying to new york then getting the grey hound bus up to toronto.

i'll try to make the new york one. Toronto is too scary to go to, because who knows if i'll be able to get back in to the USA with the border patrols now!

Boarder control really isnt that bad, I've been over about seven times (I flew into ottawa, drove over the boarder and stayed in upstate new york, then we went to the canadian side of niagra falls) its fine, you'll get asked a few questions but as long as you have photo id and have good reasons why your with the people in your car you'll be alright.

The only reason I had problems was because I'm a brit.

What if the people in my car don't tell me but tape 500 pounds of mary jane to their legs and chests?

If the border police are anything like I picture them, they may not even know what pot is.

You'd only get asked if you were acting supsicious, its usally just a guy sitting in a booth, they ask you how you know everyone in the car, why your traveling to your destination and how long you'll be there.

If somethings not right you'll get pulled over for questioning but even then they might not search the car.

But mate I'd be happy with meeting you in NY.

Do you know the dates of when you'll be in NY? From the 15th to?

wow, the two places I would NOT want to be in December.... no offense to either place though. Just that it's gotta be supercalifragilisticepialadociously cold in those two places in December.

Anyone live in Austin care to host a mini-Mishmash?

I'm in Toronto!!! But I'll be heavily pregnant and likely in labour at that time.

I guess it depends on how much there is to do, I think I think I might meet up with my friends first (and crash on one of their rels floors) and then spend a few days with bloggers, but to do that I'd need a floor to sleep on because by then i'll be pretty broke.

I guess I'd want to be in toronto by the 19th of december but that means I'm traveling on the 18th (grey hound bus takes 12 hours).

Stubby43: It may actually be cheaper to fly than to take the bus. Several years ago, I took the bus to Madison, WI, which was about an 18-hour trip which started at around 1 AM. I had long and tedious layovers in Detroit and Chicago. The border crossing was a monstrous pain in the ass -- one of the few times when the US border agents didn't bother with the veneer of politeness. (After all, anybody with a legit reason to visit the US wouldn't take the bus, right?)

The next year I flew to Chicago, and took a commuter bus to Madison. A fraction of the travel time, and $50 cheaper, and less of the hairy eyeball from Uncle Sam.

Use a site like farecompare.com to shop for deals, though if y0u're buying your ticket in Canada it may be better to go through travelocity.ca or expedia.ca

Though at the moment it's looking like it would cost over $200 which ain't the bargain it used to be. Oh well. The bus is probably much cheaper, then. And the Canadian border people won't give you much of a hard time, unless they think you're trying to pull off some tax evasion.

Frickinawesome: The US border people have to let you back in if your ID says you're a US citizen.

Thanks for the advice asfi, I'll think about it but before I commit to this I'd need to know if people would be able to make it, I dont want to go straight home but I dont want to be in these cities on my own and if I can avoid spending money on things like hotels that would be great, I cant really afford it especially around christmas.

Toronto will probably be really cold around that time. But if a blogger meetup happens and I'm in town then count me in.

Well, "really cold" all depends on what you're used to.

Toronto weather in mid-December is really variable. But ordinarily I'd expect a mid-day temperature around freezing, perhaps a bit above, perhaps a bit below.

Daytime temperatures below -10 C is rare. Ditto for above +10 C.

Mid-December is not the coldest time of year in Toronto. We've had green Christmases of late more often than not. But come back in February, and see how you feel. ;)

Well, if you can deal with a Prarie winter wind, you can deal with just about anything.
