But when you have a three hour layover you have time to think, so this is what I wrote I love you guys but its a bit prentious, sorry.
We live in an amazing envogirating time, its an age of mass communication, mass media and speed. We can call people from anywhere in the world hell we can even conntect to the internet in the desert, buy anything from anywhwere in the world and have it in our house within a matter of weeks and we can talk to anyone anywhere with a few clicks of a button. we are truely global, but this is all done in the safety of our home. But is this a good thing? I guess its how you look at it. Thanks to the net I can keep in touch with all my friends even though we've gone to university, right now I'm the 3000 miles away from home. But we live in an odd time, people say that because of the technology we are loosing community, were being drawn into platos cave (google it) we know our friends and family but we dont know our next door naighbors. those people havent realised community has oved, today people all over the world are involved in forums and blogs about anything and everything one can imagine talking about. these things are no longer new in fact there coming up to 20 years old, they are apart of life something my generation grew up with andcant imagine being with out. I myslef have been apart of the threadless community for three years and have made genuine friends on the board and yet i have never met them. Well this weekend was different, our comunity is lucky enough to have a physical focus a tee shirt buisnesss based in chicago, it was the first store opening so we decided it was high time to meet and we traveled from all over the world hell mr Rocks (blair) flew for 24 hours from new zeland just to go to it. When you speak to someone outside the cvommunity about it and try to explain they really dont understand, they worry that we'll get killed or raped or something and I have to admit it was a leap of faith for me to go because theres such a huge stigma towards it but that stigma was created in a time where most people didnt use the net where it was the resever of the odd. Thanks to the community I have friends all over the world and i would never of met these people if it wasnt for the net and we actually want to be friends, I can leave this community with very little effort, far harder in real life. This weekend I was sat in a bar in chicago eating great food, drinking good beer with people I'd never met and would never of met any other way, just sat their talking, drawing and taking photos I'd rather have those experiences then go on tourist holidays. I feel like were truely modern because we've all embraced technology and the internet to a level most people will never do, we didnt think it was odd to meet people off of the net, imagining them to be fake people. |
