I'm in a bit of a listy mood of late.

Anyway back on topic I think most of us here like to read but I also think alot of us find it difficult to get the time to do it (I for one tend to read lazy books by ecentrics, like the man who traded one red paper clip all the way up to a house, or a man who decided he was only going to answer every question he was asked with a yes and the amazing adventures they go on).

But there are books on my list that I want to read.

For me its mainly:

The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman by Laurence Sterne

written in 1759 (and over the next 10 years it was published in 9 volumes).

The book is about tristram shandy and he is attempting to write his life story but the on going joke in the book is that he cant say anything simply. Its only in volume three that he is born (it took him three books).

The story is so long and complex its been said its impossible to make it into a film (though it was attempted with a cock and bull story and there method of adapting it was to not try at all).

But i cant see myself finding time for this for a while.

Thats mainly the reason why I want to read it now, but nine books is bloody epic.

I've read A Sentimental Journey. It's by Sterne and it's short, so you could try that. If you're going for that era I would recommend Tom Jones by Henry Fielding though. Much more fun.

I've had a copy of 1984 for a couple of years, but every time I try to sit down and read it, I always get distracted before I can get past the first chapter.

It's easier for me to get through several comic books before getting through a single novel.

No Country for Old Men - I'm 1/3 of the way through it. But I keep not finding time to finish it.

I've fianlly decided that it was necessary to read the chronicles of narnia. the entire series. it just seems like something everyone should have read in their lifetime.

Thanks Nicola, I'll bear that in mind.

Cactus, 1984 is extremely over rated, Brave new world by Aldous Huxley is far better, un like 1984 which discusses control through fear brave new world talks about control through happiness and distraction I find it subsantially more interesting because out of the two its far more realistic (and by that I mean possible).

Which reminds me I want to read the book Brave new world by Aldous Huxley which discusses how close we are to it 30 years after the first publishing.

I'm not sure if its a book but I'd love to read the letter Huxley and Orwell sent to each other discussing their views of a dystopian future.

My favourite quote about the two books are:

"What Orwell feared were those who would ban books. What Huxley feared was that there would be no reason to ban a book, for there would be no one who wanted to read one." Neil Postman

Right now,

Gravity's Rainbow

lots of Dickens

a ton of other classics.

Mostly, classics.

ooh, for my AP Lang class, we had to write an in-class essay arguing which vision was more likely to come to pass - Huxley's or Orwell's. I loved that one. I think they're both great books, though.

Oh, I'm definitely going to read both 1984 and Brave New World...if only I weren't so easily distracted.

I enjoyed it (mainly because i was bored) but I want to know what the books acutally like, its supposed to have pages that are blank for no apparant reason.

The idea that a novel is un filmable interests me.

I don't think you're supposed to enjoy 1984, it's a horrible story with no likable characters. That's not to say it isn't important, I recommend it to everyone. Down and Out in Paris and London is my favorite Orwell book.

I should really read Brave New World...

Right now I'm trying to get through Heinlein's entire catalog, which is quite a daunting task, and I'm working my way through Orson Scott Card's "Ender" quartet... The reason I haven't progressed farther in it is that I'm actually afraid to, because I love Ender's Game and Speaker For The Dead so much and from what I hear, the next two books are quite horrible and I'm afraid they'll ruin my perception of the first two.

I have around 50 books on my shelf that I haven't gotten round to reading. I get new books as fast as I read though so this isn't decreasing, and there's a fair amount of stuff I don't think I'll ever be in the right mood to start, like Dostoyevsky and Homer.

Tristram Shandy is friggin' unbelievable! Right now I am trying to get through the second volume of The Man Without Qualities- also an excellent read.

Books I've been meaning to read?

Death and the Penguin by Andrey Kurkov

The Last Town on Earth by Thomas Mullen

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Ella Minnow Pea by Mark Dunn

Unfortunately, college starts in two weeks and I am currently in the middle of three books. I didn't have the time I thought I would this summer--I've been reading The Picture of Dorian Gray since May! Agh.

I just started reding "Behold The Spirit" by Alan Watts. Y'all should read anything you can find by him if you're at all into Buddhist thought and philosophy. Aside from that I recommend "Henderson The Rain King" by Saul Bellow. It's the best book I've ever read and it's like free therapy every time I read it again. The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie is another one of my favorites. As far as books on my shelf waiting to be read I've got The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath, The Ground Beneath Her Feet by Salman Rushdie, Choke by Chuck Palahniuk, and probably at least a dozen others to which I'll excuse mention until I mow through the four I've already listed. School starts tomorrow and I'm working full time as well as writing a few things of my own so I really don't know if they'll ever get read.
