Well I've finally decided to give up on buying a Nikon D80, its amazingly expensive and its too much for my first srl camera.

After doing some research it really seems to be down to the nikon d40 or the Canon Rebel XT so which one do you prefer?

Or are these out of date?

I'm trying to find something good but affordable its going to be a christmas present so the most my parents will stretch to is £400 (at a guess).

If I could afford two I might as well buy the D80.

The Rebel XTi looks like it's slightly cheaper... and you're most likely going to need to buy additional lenses and memory cards, so you should keep that in mind.

Actually looking at UK prices it was the other way round.

I know the D40 is 6 megapixels and the rebel is 8 but does that make a huge difference?

My camera is 6 megapixels, and I have printed them off at a goodly size for a few art shows and wotlike, and I've never had a problem.

I was looking at newegg anyway... I don't know if they ship to the UK, but if they are significantly cheaper than another re-seller it might be worth looking into.

Probably not to be honnest, if i spend over £20 I get a customs charge, I bought a threadless tee and a select with the postage it came to £25 I got stuck with a £13 charge.

I really dont want to imagine how much they'd charge to import a camera.

hahaha oh yeah... I forgot about that bit.

what site/catalogue are you looking at then? You could probably get decent prices on amazon.co.uk, if you haven't already looked there.

That was the one, but I couldnt find a rebel on it, they did have a newer version of the rebel but it was closer to £500.

This looks like an okay site- http://www.jessops.com/Store/c481/1-136-481/Home/Cameras--and--Lenses/Digital-SLRs/details.aspx

Anyway, dSLRs are less outdate-able than things like point and shoots... I mean, I don't have one but I'm assuming that the only things that they can improve upon aren't going to change that much. Plus, buying a slightly older model will give you more wiggle room in regards to its cost I think.

I've been told that the canon 350D is better than the rebel XT (the rebel is the US version). Bothe the canon 350d and the nikon D40 did well in the recent which review. The canon was top and the Nikon second, but there was only a couple of points in it.

Yeah I've been looking at it and the two I mentioned are being phased out, theres an improved D40 out thats 10 mega pixels which is a huge improvement on the 6 mega pixels it was at before.

Then theres the cannon eos 400D which is 10.1 mega pixels.

The problem is there a little too close to the £500 mark when my parents usually spend £200 on presents, yes it will be my 21st birthday but I was really only thinking of going about £100 over.

But it depends on what my parents say.
