Social stratification rocks.

Where do you fit into the class system?
working/lower class

Lower middle class

middle class

Upper middle class

Upper class

I'm upper middle class (according to that) cause my dads a scientist.

Heres an easier one:

social grade social status occupation
A upper middle class higher managerial, administrative or professional

B middle class intermediate managerial, administrative or professional

C1 lower middle class supervisory or clerical, junior managerial, administrative or professional

C2 skilled working class skilled manual workers

D working class semi and unskilled manual workers

E those at lowest level of subsistence state pensioners or widows (no other earner), casual or lowest grade workers

ilovetomasb
ilovetomasb on Jul 17 '07 at 5:16am
yeah hellloooo i buy like7 shirts at a time
ladykat
ladykat on Jul 17 '07 at 5:18am
Yeah, but even people who can't buy shirts can still look at the shop section.

I'm talking about a secret forum where only people who can buy a lot of shirts go... to talk about what should be printed and when the sales should be and whatnot.

Two scientists in you're family? christ all mighty you must be loaded.

Does anyone ever feel that they have to achieve higher than their parents? My dad was working class and went to a university at a time where it really was only the reserve of the middle class and the upper class (to my mum it never occoured to her that she could do it, she stumbled into being a nurse).

My parents worked hard to get to this level and I feel that I should at least attain the same level but I'd preffer to surpass them.

I've switched classes twice in my life. We were middle class, as my Dad was an engineer. Then he fell ill, and we became working class I guess. Since I now spend my own money (and that of my partner) we would be considered somewhere between upper middle and upper class.

It's all shit though. I'm still the person that I ever was (although I've always felt I was better than

Poop, I posted that before I was finished! I've always felt better than some people, no matter what class they are.

working/lower class. I grew up in the midst of the UK underclass - alcoholism, drug abuse, domestic violence I've seen it all.
fatheed

Its a balance of things that determines your class status, including peers, social circle, aspiration, income, living standard and most of all opportunity.

Class mobility is prevalent now more than ever. Most people in Britain say they are working class, but actually live very middle class lives. I came from a working class background and my parents even more so.

The difference is, I'm not ashamed to say I'm now middle class because I realise I have opportunity and economic stability. I wish more people would realise that they are no longer working class.
fatheed
   fatheed on Jul 17 '07 at 7:49am
How about this for a mind fuck... The middle class is an illusion designed to control the working classes and giving them something to aspire to.

Perhaps not so applicable now in the times of dying Blue-blood lineage, but an interesting idea.

I think one of the main criteria for being lower class should be how much over paid housing benefit you owe: me = £1750. I knew I was in the underclass the day I got my first Incapacity Benefit cheque for 'depression'.

However I now face the task of carving out a middle class existence, but the thought of going to DFS with a life partner and buying the sofa of my dreams makes me want to inject crack into my penis and beat up women.
stubby43
stubby43 on Jul 17 '07 at 4:20pm
Well I sure as hell dont want the middle class existence my mum and dad have, I hate living in suburbia and I dont like the expectation on people to go to university.

I dont know anyone who hasnt gone to university, the college I went to actually went out of their way to make it difficult for people who didnt want to go to uni. They wouldnt suggest other options, they'd take you in for talks and when they realised that you werent going to go they just ignored you.

The college was amazing if you wanted to go to uni, but if you werent they'd drop you as fast as they could.

Apparently I'm upper middle class.

But I don't exactly reap the benefits of that.

My family is Lower Middle Class. Though I think with the career I choose, I'll end up having a family that is Upper Middle Class.
