For all my complaining about work, I'm used to it now its hard but I'm earning £225 a week and I desperatly need the money to go to canada.

But today I got asked to be a part of something I dont agree with.

I work in a bakery (which will go un named) which mainly deals with buscuits (most of them some form of ginger bread men), yesterday a shop (which will also go un named) sent a shipment of gingerbread men back to us.

We were told to un pack them and put them in trays ready to be re packed. We werent really told anything though it was suggested the reason the buscuits had been sent back was because the sell by date had been mis printed.

Thankfully I was only on this line for a few minutes before being moved to somewhere else.

However today I was on the line given the job of re packing them and latter on in the day we were told that these buscuits were a week out of date. were not exactly sure who told us to re pack them, if it was the shop or the bakery but either way I feel its wrong someone could get food poisoning from these and I've been a part of it.

But I really need the money I cant quit my job because without this income I'll majorly miss out on stuff in canada and if I were to report this to trading standards they would figure out it was me and I'd be sacked.

Whats more if things arent better next year I would like to work for them because on the whole they are good, this is the first time I've come across anything like this their very strict on washing hands and if something has touched the floor (even in packaging) we throw it away.

That does sound dodgy, but on the other hand, I've never heard of anyone getting food poisoning from a biscuit. If anything, they just get stale.

I would like to say that if someone got sick it isn't your problem because you were just doing what you are told.

But because I was in a similar situation with work and reporting stuff...

I'd say report it. You should be able to do it anonymously, or if you can't they should have some kind of privacy laws. They can not fire you for turning them in. They could cut back your hours though, which would suck...buy you gotta do what you gotta do.

I don't think anyone would get sick from an out of date cookie unless it had mold growing on it.

As you can see, I have no real advice for you. You can only weigh the pros against the cons, and stick to the decision you make, whatever it is. Don't beat yourself up.

You cant get food poisoning from a biscuit, unless they're severely undercooked. if they're just old, they will start to harden and mold. only an idiot would eat a moldy biscuit.

I'm quiting on the 15th of august anyway, the problem is that this isnt a descision someones made on the floor its management thats made the descision.

They didnt look mouldy or stale but I wouldnt want to eat them.

Hope so, the ironic thing is this company sells itself on being family owned meaning they dont have to worry about share holders and want to do the best for their customers.

perhaps it was just the supervisor who wanted them to be re packed and not the company? and you could speak with their supervisor...

either way, good luck.

Here you can just anonymously report the problem to the Health Department and someone will come out and investigate. Generally the only people who will get fired are the managers involved and unless you have some serious violations I don't imagine that the whole place would be shut down.

Even if it does, that's the right thing to do, if not for the obvious moral reasons then to preserve the quality of your product.

ah man, that sucks. Maybe you would feel more comfortable reporting it after you quit? Its a tough call - but like people say, I dont think youll get food poisoning from a biscuit...
