I work in a book shop on the weekends, usually I dont get time to read magazines because I'm rushed off my feet but this week I was working sunday and on a sunday you'll only have about 50 customers in a day.

I was reading the new issue of computer arts and on the questions page some guy was ranting and raving how stinger represented the downfall of the magazine and the design industry. Another guy followed up that by saying something like his child could do draw them.

once a critic makes a comment like that, they lose all credibility to me.

margolove on Jul 11 '07 at 1:11pm
wow... ouch!

that's such a common thing to say about artists, though, isn't it?
margolove
margolove on Jul 11 '07 at 1:11pm
yeah, it just seems like such a... silly and pointless thing to say.

A bad review by joe q fuckwit in your local bookshop? I imagine they must be really hot designers, themselves.
Atrix
Atrix on Jul 11 '07 at 1:13pm
Hm, I agree with Sonmi.

Also, I think that small children are some of the best artists, you're the most imaginative when you're a little kid. What a lame comment. D:

computer arts can be a good exposure piece but if ur in it sometimes some designers don't like it.
stubby43
stubby43 on Jul 11 '07 at 1:14pm
Sorry I worded that badly these were people who sent in comments to computer arts magazine, one of them left a website so I assume his work is more complex.

i wish i could draw like a child, then.

psh, that's bullshit.

but on a

related note
sonmi
   sonmi on Jul 11 '07 at 1:17pm
if all you gauge in a work is the complexity of its technique, then your critical perception is very narrow.

... for some reason i can't think of another way to word that, but yeah.

I see, Stubbsy. I'll have a read in work tomoz.

I'd buy the issue but im skint at the moment plus I already bought a copy of the special editions they do devoted to a theme, this time round it was underground art.

But if your thinking about buying this months issue its all about design collectives, its quite interesting.

It wasn't a review as much as a letter in Computer Arts Magazine.

If I get really, really bored, I'll type it out.

Just said he was bored with Dragons and Worms and quirky characters and that "all this vector kiddie stuff is, well, just childish."

I can see where he's coming from. Sometimes I wake up thinking. 'If I see another lousy dragon or worm today I shall go spare!'

Who or what is Stinger?

Go to search bar, select 'product', type in stinger.

How could ANYONE object to Stingerstyler's style? It's just FUN.

Morons. Since when was good design about whether or not a child could draw it?

And the idiocy of it is, a child couldn't come up with the concepts and execution of Stinger's designs.
Bramish
   Bramish on Jul 12 '07 at 4:40am
I haven't read it, but perhaps they're just bored of seeing the same kind of thing over and over?
Bramish
   Bramish on Jul 12 '07 at 4:42am
That's not meant as a personal attack on Jan or his work by the way, but there are many artists who as talented as they may be, I'd like to see them mix it up a bit and try something new.
exoticrobotic
exoticrobotic on Jul 12 '07 at 4:52am
you could say that about anything on this earth bramish...

music for instance. there are different genres of music, but you could say all indie music sounds the same. now i know that not all indie music is the same...but to people who dont listen to it, they would see it as sounding all the same because its not their style.
Bramish
   Bramish on Jul 12 '07 at 4:54am
That's my point. Kind of.
Bramish
   Bramish on Jul 12 '07 at 4:56am
If a person's not a fan of a certain recognisable style, and an artist always uses that style, it's pretty likely that person won't be a fan of that artist's work.
chelly
chelly on Jul 12 '07 at 8:12am
if that person is actually an artist himself, then he should know better than to be so disrespectful with his distaste for a certain style. nay, he should make an effort to prove a valid point in a means that he would like someone to comment on his own art. to outright bash someone in a publication is such a waste of time, especially if that publication is one that is trying to spread all kinds of art into the world.

I just read it in Smiths, not that bad really, Computer Arts stick up for Stinger anyway. Plus the work on his website is whack beyond belief.
Monkey III
Monkey III on Jul 12 '07 at 8:21am
Sometimes I buy the magazine when i see some good stuff. I never use the included cd lol.

They also showcase alot of whackass artists. But also very good ones. So it's all good.
tesco
   tesco on Jul 12 '07 at 8:24am
I never buy it anymore, my mate used to nick them and sell them at college but even at discount prices I don't like it. The CA website is great for free tutorials though.

Its the only arts magazine worth buying in smiths, but then we lack a selection.

I usually have alot of time on my hands so I tend to read it and then I want to buy it.
tesco
   tesco on Jul 12 '07 at 8:29am
stubby you will like Grafik (£8 though). Next issue has spreads designed by me! I'm a big boy now.

Also Creative Review is great
Tonteau
   Tonteau on Jul 12 '07 at 8:33am
*takes grafik off cool list*

We get compter arts at work. It's mostly filler, but you do get some nice stuff in there on occasion. I'd love to say I use all the free tutorials, but I just can't be bothered reading all that stuff.
stubby43
stubby43 on Jul 12 '07 at 8:40am
I've looked at creative review a few times but never got into it, I need something with alot of strong graphics to pull me in because I dont have alot of time to read at work unless its a sunday (only a 20 minute lunch break) creative review is probably good when you read it but its images arent that special (going from memory its been about a year since I've looked at it0.

As for grafik we dont stock that one, I work in a smaller smiths so our selection is alot smaller, if I can be arsed to trek to chester I'll pick it up.
