In the topic things worth fighting for someone stated that freedom, democracy and the american way are worth fighting for, but what exactly is the american way?

By the title it suggests something that is distinctly american and yet america is far from unique, the majority of the western world lives under demorcrtatic rule and by deffinition have freedom and the fact that freedom and democracy are listed seperatly suggests the american way is something entirely different.

Which leaves only comerce which every nation takes part in to an extent and has existed way before america.

So can someone explain to me, what is the american way?

Shary Bobbins: If there's a task that must be done,

Don't turn your tail and run,

Don't pout, don't sob,

Just do a half-assed job!

If... you... cut every corner

It is really not so bad,

Everybody does it,

Even mom and dad.

If nobody sees it,

Then nobody gets mad,

Bart Simpson: It's the American way!

Shary: The policeman on the beat

Needs some time to rest his feet.

Chief Wiggum: Fighting crime is not my cup of tea!

Shary: And the clerk who runs the store

Can charge a little more

For meat!

Apu: For meat!

Shary: And milk!

Apu: And milk!

Both: From 1984!

Shary: If... you... cut every corner,

You'll have more time for play,

Shary & OFF: It's the American waaaaay!

Tonteau, I'm sure they do but I'm trying to figure out the meaning of said phrase because it gets bounded around alot and doesnt really make sense.

Not Ur toylet, if your reffering to americas wars then you are simplifying all the issues surrounding them.

th american way is more teh american dream .. to be able to make yourself into anything you want to be just by busting your ass enough to get there. oddly enough its practiced mostly by those that have moved here from other countries. granted thats kind of how its always been teh immigrants come over and work incredibly hard so that teh next generations of their families can have teh comforts that they never had which in turn leads tehm (teh future generations)to live somewhat (depending on the case) spoiled lives and in turn they dont work quite as hard.

the same applies to the poorer families in america .. someone will work their way up but teh future generations might not stick to teh roots tehy came from

But I fink the american way is to exploit other countries natural resources (like oil), install puppet governments and work behind the sets to make the rich richer and poor porrer.

it's been the same since the beginning of civilization

the few owns the majority of the money and the "important" people impress their image upon whoever will accept it

So the american dream is to rise above your station, I guess the phrase really only works within the context of the mass imigration america expereienced over its history.

The actual act of improving ones position in life isnt really an american thing more a demorcratic ideal because in any democracy people are able to raise themselves.

Sir Alan sugar of amstrad was working class an is a multi millionaire but theres no way you could mistake him for beng an american.

THE AMERICAN WAY IS THE WAY OF STARTING FROM SCRATCH AND MAKING A GOOD HONEST LIVING AND NOT COMPROMISING YOU PRINCIPALS OF FREEDOM AND EQUALITY AND JUSTICE AND IT'S ALSO A PHRASE FROM THE CAPTAIN AMERICA COMIC BOOKS I THINK AND IT'S ALL ABOUT HOW THIS COUNTRY IS A COUNTRY OF IMMIGRANTS EVER SINCE THE EARLY NINETEENTH CENTURY WHEN WE MURDERED ALL THE NATIVES.

I dont quite know how to respond to that because its an incredibly biased point of view, but unfortunatly it is the majority (ironically for this statment created because of american hatred of impreialism).

I fit into the Niall Ferguson school of thought which is very un popular, I believe that in the right circumstances empire is a good thing and that if america were to pick up its imperial responsibility the world would be a better place but saddly america is un able to do this because of its duck and cover ideology.

"The American Way" was coined long before the world was a wonderful democratic/capitalistic/free-market place. But the way we americans live is still unique. Thats why there is still culture shock between countries. I mean, I dont expect to go to London or Paris and see an extension of New York City or Hollywood California. No one thing is that drastically different today (though long ago it was) but added up all the small things create an entirely different culture.

I don't know...I think with the globalisation of American culture there's less culture shock for outsiders going in to the States than there is for Americans coming out. Certainly I don't see much difference between New York and London, except New York is awesome and London is just annoying =)

But steve, Britian has been a free market, democratic capitalistic society long before colonisation of america took place we have a long history of re straining our royals from achieving anything near the totalitarian regimes acheived in european states first by the aristocracy then by the house of lords and then the house of commons.

Whats more you directly get your sense of democracy, capitalism and free market from us, how you put the goverment in place isw different true our method wasnt practical for for such a large nation (but its arguable as the commonwealth developed it was run in a similar way canadians choosing their own laws and taxations but ultimatly answerable to britian) and we set up all these institutions in all our colonies.

I've heard that banded around before, but to say that is to totally ignore european (but largely british influence). The colonists were not sioux indians nor were the revolutionairies and I highly doubt they were well versed in sioux culuture since they tended to view indians as savages.
