Moscow threatens to aim missiles at Europe

"If the American nuclear potential grows in European territory, we will have to have new targets in Europe," Mr Putin said.

A full report

Putin threatens to aim nuclear missiles at europe

In an interview ahead of this week's G8 summit, President Putin has threatened to point Russian missiles towards Europe for the first time since the end of the Cold War, if the United States builds a defence shield in Eastern Europe. This report from Rupert Wingfield-Hayes:

Listen to the story
If President Putin's words are anything to go by, it looks like being a pretty stormy G8 summit in Germany this week. First up was the United States: Mr Putin poured scorn on its plans to build a new missile shield in Eastern Europe. If it goes ahead, Russia would, he said, be forced to respond by pointing its own missiles at European targets. It would be the first time since the end of the Cold War that Europe has been directly targeted by Russian nuclear missiles.
He then went on to accuse the West of hypocrisy in criticising Russia's human rights record. Responding to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, he said the United States is the main violator of freedoms and human rights around the world and he added that France, Germany and Britain have problems of their own.

Finally he accused Britain of foolishness in trying to extradite a former KGB officer for the murder of Alexander Litvinenko. President Putin said Britain knew Russia's constitution prohibits such an extradition. By pushing ahead, he said, Britain was engaging in PR and politics, and any way you look at it, it's pure foolishness.

Yes Moscow is in europe but it is in the very far eastern europe, what Putin is doing is threatening a start to a cold war (litterally, he states that the americans are restarting an arms race in europe).

America plans to build a missile defense grid and is building bases in poland, you say its to protect us against rogue states such as Iran and Korea but Putin feels the real target is Russia.

Now weather he is serriously considering it or not is debatable as is russia's strength but no matter how you look at it this is one of the most serrious events in history because were the closest to a nuclear war than we've been in a very long time.

Well no, since Moscow is a city, in the part of Russia that lies in Europe.

Just to clarify, Russia is both apart of Russia and apart of asia, which has cause nightmares for running the country through out its history, one because its so vast and two because its incredibly culturally diverse, for a long time it was backward for a european nation but on the other hand forward for an asiatic nation.

Another article

To be honnest it seems more like a power play to boost his confidence with the Russian people and to get them to look away from their worsening human rights record, but if niether side backs down we could fall into a new cold war.

There's a presidential election in Russia soon. Isn't it possible that Putin's only ramping up the rhetoric to please the nationalists and to score some political points by seeming the "tough guy" and standing up to the Americans?

Also, what do you think GWB would say if Russia placed a missile defense system around Cuba? Just like the Missile Crisis in '62, I don't think it would go down too well...

Putin can't run again, though. His two terms are up. In all likelihood he's going to hand-pick his successor, and it'll probably be someone pretty similar. I think I remember reading somewhere that Putin will probably go back to being head of his party (United Russia?) and still play a pretty big role in politics. He's been sort of ambiguous about his plans.

It doesnt really matter, Russia isnt capable of putting a missile defense system in cuba, the fact of the matter is by 2012 Russia will only have 100 nukes, yes that can do alot of damage but the america has more. In a hypothetical situtation where russia puts nukes in cuba America can just say no your not.

One of the russians worries is that it will encourage the Chinese to start building nukes on a far larger scale and china is far more capable of this than Russia.

Its a difficult situation but Putin is trying to get america to back down for its own defense, even if america has no interest in war with russia (or anything related) theres alot of pressure from china, some of the russian territories close to china are dependant on them, they only produce 4 months of food and the other 8 months comes from china. Its not un reasonable to imagine these territories braking away from russia to join china.
