I dont know what the situtation is else where in the world but right now in the uk recyling has become a big topic of debate, right now some countys operate recycling as part of their rubbish pick up whilst others dont.

In my area it does but your only allowed to put plastic bottles in plastic (though metal and glass are fine).

I dont understand why we dont recycle more? I just cant understand why we have to throw away so much product when we can simply re use it, we have more than enough to keep us going with out needing to make more plastic.

To me it seems so simple, you put all your metals in one box, plastic, glass, paper all in different boxes and they go away to their respective factories. There sorted then brought back to their most basic level (e.g melted down) and then companies buy the raw material and use it to build new products.

The system would be self suffiencent so why cant we introduce it?

Whilst were on the subject of ethical companies and recycling anybody know of good ones, clothes for example?

worn again shoes

They take old clothes and make them into trainers, lets try and get a bit of a list going.

Who knows? People are lazy, and possibly it costs more to recycle than to waste more resources and make new stuff?

In the US, at least where I live, the garbage service doesn't even do recycling, so you either have to go out of your way, or pay an extra amount or something, just to get your recyclables picked up.

It just seems that its a situation that can be changed so easily, I understand almost perfectly that americans have to drive everywhere because it is the nature of the country but we should be trying to reduce our impact and the goal we should be aiming for seems so obvious.

But my ignorance on the subject means i'm probably under estimating the complexity of it.

Oh I dont mean to be preachy, it was just a thought.

that's too bad, hanza.

Where I live in the US, recycling is picked up.. it doesn't even need to be sorted; there's a center that does that. Also, they accept pretty much everything except for some select grades of plastic and plastic bags.

Unfortunately, a lot of it is consumer responsibility and education. One of my classes went on a sort of "enivonmental tour" yesterday, and one of the stops was the landfill. Even though recycling gets picked up, 60% of the stuff the landfill receives is recyclable, which is pretty sad.

recycling used to be picked up with our garbage, but it's not anymore.

we recycle all our newspaper, etc because the paper recycling place is close to our house.

however, the place that recycles plastic and glass, etc is not within a distance that is practical for us to take our stuff there.
