To all those at college or have been, whats it like sharing a room with someone you've never met until you got to university?

I'm british and I'm going on an exchange program to canada and I believe in the accomodation I'm staying in I'll be sharing a room which seems to happen all the time in america and canada from the films we see over here and what I've heard.

For us brits we dont share rooms, only in very few universities does this happen and living in halls has been bad enough (what with people falling out) I'm a bit nervous of the prospect of sharing a room with a total stranger, it just seems odd.

So whats it like, good or bad?

it depends how well the two of you adapt. you could find a best friend or you could be annoyed. if you can find a quiet place to study and are both respectful about the sleeping hours you should probably be good.

It was fine for me. We didn't become good friends, but things went smoothly.

it cant be great or horrible, just depends.

my roommate last year was great but the one i had this year i would rather never ever talk to again ever again. she was horrid.

just adress the tie on the doorknob rule not even 5 minutes after meeting them- it makes things way less akward in the future

Depends on the people involved. Go in with an open mind.

Ahh yes, so you're going to the city that rhymes with fun then?

aka THE VAG!

My brother lives there, he likes it.

It definitley depends.

My first dorm-mate was a heroin addict, so that was weird.

Then I moved in with my best friend, and we are now enemies.

Then I moved in with Mallory (Rambunkcious) and now I consider her one of my best friends.

So it depends on the person, and how laid back about stuff you are willing to be. Definitley choose your battles wisely, no matter who you live with.

It's all about the roommate that you get. Honestly, it's hit or miss.

The only roommate that I ever had that I didn't know was my freshman year of college. He turned out to be the nicest guy ever, which is good, but I know lotsa people that got stuck with dickheads.

Yeah, I guess it will just depend, but how do you lot go around finding your own space because it seems like your with at least someone 24 hours a day.

Yup Julie, certainly am I'm looking forward to it but nervous were booking flights at the moment so its kind of getting close.

I'm glad your bro likes it, I mean I know its the provice capital but apart from that city there doesnt seem to be anything to do in the area, deffiently nothing touristy.

What sort of temperatures is it going to go down to? I'll be there from the first of september till the 20th of december.

it can be awesome

it can be totally shitty

or it can just be okay, someone you get along well enough with but arent like best friends with

just try to make the best of it

besides, i dont know about canada

but in america, everyone loves a british kid!

so youre bound to make friends no matter what.

how far north will you be?

My guess is that it'll start off comfortably warm in September and then get darn cold towards the end of your stay.

my first roomate and i were completely opposite. he wasn't cool and i was completely radical. lessons were learned like, you can't and won't always get along with everyone. and, 60-40 is equal.

staying in a comfort zone may help your skin stay soft, but chances are you'll reside in this vanilla landscape too long and simply fade away like a snow drift.

oh and what kind of room will you be staying in?

i live with 2 other girls in one room

with community baths and no in room sink

which sucks, i mean just having a sink would make this place that much better...

but yeah the room situation makes some difference too

like will it be a straight up dorm? or more like an on campus apartment?

I'll be this far north, yes the name of the city is rather unfortunate and highly amusing:

I dont know Karen, I have to book the room I want but it cant be much worse than what i have now, communal bath rooms, no sink in in the toliets but thankfully a sink in the rooms.

Oh, well in September it'll likely still be quite nice, possibly shorts weather for a few weeks still. Usually from around Halloween to February-March it'll be pretty fucking cold (expect -20 C on a typical winter day) so invest in a decent jacket.

And there is definitely some touristy stuff, check out

the Science Centre (lots of schools take trips but fun for adults too)

Wascana Park (large urban park and lake)

Sask Legislature Building (fun to sit in on and hear all the shouting and swearing across the floor....oh democracy)

Royal Saskatchewan Museum (I went as a kid and seem to remember it as being decent)

Casino Regina

The MacKenzie Art Gallery

I think there's some RCMP museum opening too since the national training barracks are in Regina.

You should try and catch a Roughriders CFL game or a Regina Pats WHL game...I mean, if you're in Canada you'd better see some hockey.

And of course as most places on the prairies, there are plenty of bars and pubs. You'll likely have opportunity for a decent concert or two.

I don't think you'll be at too much of a shortage of things to do. At the very least, you can always visit Chuck E. Cheese.

Try your hand at curling too. You can rent a sheet and try it with some friends....it's like bowling.
