I'm broke, i'm on holiday for another two weeks and nothing to do.

But I had a brainwave, Its quite good weather this time of weather (it justifsy shorts and tee shirts) I was thinking of going around an asking if i could mow peoples lawns and/or weed their garden.

Is it a good idea? how much should I charge, should I go flyers or knocking on peoples doors, should I go proffesional or begging (as in my actual situation, I'm a university student home for easter, I dont have a job and i need to save up money to go on an exchange program to canada for 4 months).

when i was younger skating around town i had a great idea when we had no money - we had no supplies of any sort and we were thirsty from skateboarding around town

i decided to go to all the apartments around where we were and have scavenger hunt - first person to open a door i told them we were doing a scavenger hunt then asked if they had a pen and paper

next i made an actual list of things, random things as well. first we were thirsty so we asked for soda, we asked for some food, snacks, candy, then it got random with a playboy, a quarter with a certain date on it - stuff like that - we never checked off any of the stuff but a few items we wouldnt be able to use like yesterdays newspaper - so every house we went to we got at least a soda and some other crap, it was a great idea for a punk skater who was thirsty and ended up making a few bucks while i was at it

I meant if you're saving money for a trip, get a regular bar job.

mowing lawns is always a good idea, very few people like doing it, its a chore, charge $15 or $20 to mow & weed and clean up - as long as your not doing any huge houses then i'd charge more

Fair enough, to be honnest I'm either working in a vegatble sorting factory over summer or Roberts Bakery. Either way its factory work.

But I want to earn some quick cash, it'll wipe out my over draft this holiday and if its enough code be seed money for something else I'm working on.

Depends on the size of the lawn, if you'll be using your own mower/weed eater and how overgrown the yard is.

Charge $15 for small yards that need only a little work, and go from there. Be prepared for many "no's" and to be negotiable with your prices.

If you can, find an upscale neighborhood.

My cousins used to do this, and while they could get $20 from one yard in an okay neighborhood they could get $50 or more for the same sized yard in a more upscale neighborhood.

Make up a bunch of cool-ass flyers and paper the whole area, everywhere within traveling distance. That knocking-on-the-door stuff gets old real fast and those "nos" are depressing. Let them ring you up. If they want it done, they'll let YOU know (unless you're a kick ass salesman, and if you are, what the hell are you doing wasting time cutting grass?) Put them in grocery stores, drug stores, coffee shops, etc. You'd be surprise how many calls you'd get.

Thanks guys, I live in a fairly upscale neighborhood, there very keeping up with the jones's people (as in every weekened out washing the car, that type of thing) its actually quite sickening.

Right so flyers it is, this will be intersting oh and I will be providing a mower.

Thanks guys.

Believe me I'm working on stuff for the future, right now I'm putting a load of new stuff together for my webzine and I might be putting on a gig which if successful will turn into a mini tour, which means I'll be able to pay for a proper website.

Basically its a case of I need to spend money to make money but I dont have money to spend.
