But I cant, its now 5 am and I am writing an essay, why? because I cant get my mind to shut down, its a problem.

Its hard to explain, but it happens every night I think constantly, obsesivly about useless things I've been thinking for three hours on what I need to do to my blog, what I need to do to my essay and thinking about how I need to shut down and sleep.

Most nights I shut down after a bit but some nights I have bad nights, this is one of them.

Wikipedia tells me this:

1. Sit or lie comfortably, with loose garments.

2. Put one hand on your chest and one on your stomach.

3. Slowly inhale through your nose or through pursed lips (to slow down the intake of breath).

4. As you inhale, feel your stomach expand with your hand. If your chest expands, focus on breathing with your diaphragm.

5. Slowly exhale through pursed lips to regulate the release of air.

6. Rest and repeat.

It helps if you really concentrate on your breathing. I learned in my yoga class that when you're inhaling, fill the bottom part of your lungs first, then the middle, then the top. When exhaling, let the air out of the top first, then middle, then bottom. You should also exhale for twice as long as you inhale for (so if you inhale for five counts, exhale for ten).

This always helps me sleep because the deep breathing is calming, and on top of that you're concentrating so much on where to direct the air and on counting how long your breaths are that you forget about all the things on your mind that are stopping you from relaxing.

Good luck, I hope this helps.

Thanks Whisper, I'll go try it hopefully it'll help. I feel a bit better now because I've done something on my essay so I can relax a bit.

You can get natural medicines (or real medicines) to help with this. My little sister has to use the natural stuff to help her brain shut down. Maybe it's something you can look into?

I have tried that breathing stuff before, but I end up getting worked up over counting my breaths and it doesnt help.

Oh, and sometimes when I'm really stressed I feel like I don't want to bother with the breathing because I always tell myself it won't work... But instead of brushing it off like that, just force yourself to do one or two breaths and see how much of a difference it makes. It's pretty remarkable. :)
