Its something I've been thinking about a fair bit because of photography and honnestly is damn right confusing.

Photography is capturing a moment in time and alot of time is spent thinking about the framing the picture getting the right light and choosing the right subject.

But then that discounts the photographs taken by chance, those photos that capture so much meaning, or just look amazing and really it was just luck it came out that way.

I remember one photograph that I saw in the national portrait gallery that depicted two old ladies walking down the street, at the side there was a hedge with riot police hiding behind it whilst in the background and on the floor were bricks and pieces of wood.

The two old women were just walking through the riot chatting like nothing was happening.

This is a photo that could not be set up and yet it is considered art.

So does that mean if I'm looking through pictures of my friends can I decide that photo is not a picture of friends but is a piece of art work?

It normally takes an other person to decide your work is art.

True, but when you build up a portfolio or put it on a website, thats a consious choice to call something you've created art.

I think the things that you put in your portfolio do not need to be art. Photographs are used for so many different things, and with so many people taking photographs these days there are more and more great shots out there. These are not all art. You wouldn't hang them on your wall and gaze at them, but if they were in your portfolio, they would show that you could take great photographs. I'm not sure if I'm getting my point across. Basicaaly not all photo's are art, just like not all paint on a canvas. It's all objective.

I think one of my photographs is art. I framed it up right nice for someone (at their request). He has it in his office. People comment to the point that he if bored telling them it's one mine. More than one person wants it. I see fame and fortune in my future*

well along the lines of pictures of your friends i would say the point it becomes art is when those particular pictures no longer hold meaning to just your self, if someone else can look at them and find something meaningful then it could be art, like that picture of the old ladies, im sure when those two would look at that picture they would see them selves and think of that, but when someone disconnected fromt hem looks at it they see the awkward juxtaposition of old ladies and a riot.

its a tough call. but in the long run art is what ever you want it to be and what other people are willing to accept as art.

heres the definition on dictionary.com

"the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance."

so if someone is trying to say photography isnt art then they probably dont have a brain capable of higher thought.

Art has to raise some sort of emotion. If not then it's just decoration, or it's just a photo, or a nice object. It has to have something more. A reaction that will make one persons heart beat faster, and make them want to own it. Remember the conversation wse had about the painting I bought?

I don't know.. I think art can be purely aesthetic.
RyanSargent
RyanSargent on Jan 06 '07 at 6:04pm
aesthetics have to create some type of feeling, aesthetics alone mean nothing, its the emotion it develops which is important. and since that feeling is subjective then no one can determine what is or isnt art.

you decide when what you are doing is art. fuck everyone else!!!
deboraborialis
deboraborialis on Jan 06 '07 at 6:06pm
Exactly! What is art for me, is not for you, as you don't feel the same way about it. We can both appreciate a nice photograph or painting, but can disagree on whether or not it's art.

This has suddenly made me think of Van Morrison. He never rated Brown Eyed Girl as a song at all. He only wrote it for the money, there was no feeling in it.

I need to go to bed.
