So, at some point within a year I will either be moving back to the NYC area or possibly out to LA.
I'm looking for a list of pros and cons about life in either city from people who live or have lived there, or maybe from people who know people etc.
Current major issues are:
Most of my family is on the east coast, except for my brother who lives in So Cal and my aunt who lives near Chicago.
I have significantly fewer, but potentially better connections in LA.
Most of the people I know working at around the same level as myself are making less money in NYC than comparable friends in LA.
I am more familiar with NYC and comfortable getting around the fabric stores, making me a more valuable designer here.

Thoughts?

Hmm... so far no bites.
Anyway... I know there are some folks from both coasts.
We'll sit and wait.

i have a friend who's lived, for significant amount of time, in both NYC and LA. (He's also lived in Chicago and St. Louis)
He really, really disliked LA. And not so much California - specifically LA.

I've been out to LA a handful of times and I really disliked it, in general, but I've, personally, never been to NY. So my perspective is meaningless.

It seems you're leaning towards NYC already, so would any persuasion for LA really make you change your mind? I don't know your details well enough to accurately give you a list of pros and cons tailored to you, but the only thing i can say is I live in LA and I like it quite a bit!

Pros
NYC is closer to Evan and extremely fun times. Therefore

Cons
The distance between you and fun times will be entirely skewed if you decide to live in LA.

Plus, at least the pollution in NYC isn't a blanketing beast that actually swoops out of the sky and attacks unsuspecting lungs passages like in LA.

I am not a fan of LA. I lived in Venice Beach and it was nice, but the rest was just....ehhh. Everyone is obsessed with "connections" and not actually making friends. And it gets really boring unless you like hard drugs or do something with Hollywood.

if you come to SoCal, i'll buy you an In-N-Out burger and a milkshake :)

if you go to NYC, i can mail you a burger, but it might not taste as good :P

Ive been to LA 4 times and got Bronchitus everytime I have gone, the smog there is just awful.

California has earthquakes, but also has a warmer climate year round.

NYC is dirty, but fun. The people are meaner, but at least they are honest, vs. LA fake niceness.

It gets cold in NY, but then you also have snow.

My vote of course would be for nyc.

NYC... because then it's easier to stalk you.

The secret LA advantage would be the living situation.
There is a chance that in LA, my boyfriend and I would have a house for cheap, compared to NYC rental, and he'd be closer to his family.

I have never heard of cheap housing in LA.. from what I understand it is extremely expensive.

you could go the bridge and tunnel route and get a place in jersey or even brooklyn instead of living IN nyc.

Yeah, seriously. Bypass southern California in general and live in San Francisco.

Well, it's a house in his family. They rent it out, so it wouldn't be free, but I don't think we'd be paying market prices.

Aaahahahaha. I love SF.

But I also love hard drugs.

Wait! There's a fine supply of them here, too!!

i don't think i'd be moving for the drugs so much as for the theatre and film work.

ok no offense to all you people bashing LA but stop you obviously havnt lived here or visited here long enough to see LA fun and potential

everyone here is not obsessed with drugs and connections or hollywood thats just a crap sterotype just because LA is an entertainment capitol its not all TMZ and Access Hollywood and if thats what you think then you are retarded

yes california has earthquats but they are so rare I really freaking hate how everyone says that "omg but california has earthquakes!!" get over it! its not like they happen every 5 seconds

My sister stayed in both of them last summer and had a significantly worse time in LA, she said it was horrible and that she didn't feel comfortable being out at night. New York, on the other hand is her most favouritist place ever ever.

LA is a shit hole for the most part. Extremely hot, densely populated, and poluted.

There's loads of things to do, but the cons just kill it for me.

I've never been to NYC, but wish to badly.

I'm a New Yorker, I think the prices here make it hard to save up to leave, but that's just me. Rents are cheap if you're willing to work for it, I still pay under 1000 for my place, but then, when I first moved to NYC I in no way thought that was cheap, Perceptions change the longer you're out here. . . .Also, I've never had any problem finding a job, but I'm a different person, and as stated above, personalization is key. For me, the ease in employment, in getting around the city, and the inability to save keeps me here :D

i didn't read through this, but from what i understand the LA job scene sucks right now because of the strike. it seems like every business is affected.
