...usually these things are exposed during voting thankfully...am i wrong is there a 20% rule relating to intellectual property... something like that... if you change something by 20% and it's not immediately recognisable it's usable... i disagree with that if it is true... & i can't tell you where i heard that... but it used to give my little students hope... i think to be fair the concept is similar guitar becomes tree but the execution is quite different? im pretty convinced a straight rip off of a Far Side Cartoon made it through but ive been too lazy to look it up... anyway it's an interesting debate...

i don't think this design is "ripping off" the one from IF. a simple google image search for "guitar tree" or "guitar tree shirt" turns up several other similar designs. so ... is the design from IF all that original to begin with?

i like this one best out of any i've seen.

not guilty,
and done.

Different guitar, different tree, different treatment. Only the idea is the same, and it's not totally original.

It's a decent enough call, to be fair. But your anger against threadless is misdirected. Clearly they would never knowingly print something that's ripped off, so really you have t look at the designer. And besides, they print masses of t-shirts which are 100% original. The nature of the competition means that certain mistakes may occur. Whether this is one is a topic for debate.

but in the end it really is just a guitar turning into a tree and although i can't pinpoint where else, i have seen that before and it never seemed to me as a unique enough concept to copyright.

it's not about copyright, i havent alerted the authorities or anything. ^.^ i jsut thought it was a cheap shot in general and if people consider it such a common idea, my question is of course--why print it?

well i mean it's not really up to us individuals but stylistically the piece he did is nice/pretty well done and certainly those who decide what gets to print really liked it.

after the bad designs are weeded out and threadless folk have a ton of good designs to choose from, personal taste is considered i assume.

Sometimes common ideas, if rendered well, win.

Most of the time, people question more unique/abstract ideas, even if the render is done well.

As J-ray pointed out my design above that turns from a tree to a guitar (SWITCHEROO!)

I submitted that a day before I saw the design above printed, and I almost kicked myself, as it stood, I had been called a thief in so few words by the creator of another design with an acoustic carved out of a stump, his was in the running 2 days before mine, so we submitted them days apart without knowing eachother's design.

I think the fact that there are 4 similarities fuels the argument that coincidences can ACTUALLY HAPPEN! weird, huh?

haha, papaprime, I'm sure I've seen it around before but yours came to mind because it's so recent. Using the same concept is not stealing, and I'm sure yours was coincidental.

I didn't think you were attacking my J-Ray, just pointing out another similar idea, the majority of my post was a response to kaib0rg

occasionally 2 artistic minds (or more) have similar ideas. In t-shirt design very little is completely new.

My girlfriend, Mona Lisa, keeps harping on about me doing a portrait of her but apparently some old geezer's already done one. I told her she will have to wait 'til the fuss dies down.

honestly, i saw this IF design too, way after i had done mine... pure coincidence... what can i say? besides, the approaches are different.

to insinuate that someone is stealing ideas, is to assume that there is intention behind the decision to take someone elses art.

Give people some credit would you?
