are t-shirts art?
I'm doing a research project for my art history class about fashion, and what makes an article of clothing ART as opposed to just clothes.

I don't question the fact that designs printed on Threadless shirts are art.

But it seems that most people wouldn't think of a plain colored tee shirt as art.

So my question is, does putting that artistic design on a regular ol' tee shirt make the tee shirt itself art? Or is it just a tee shirt with art on it?

PLEASE respond, I'd like as many answers to this question as possible!! and EXPLAIN YOURSELF!!

self expression is a form of art and wearing a particular t-shirt is a form of self expression, thereby making it art

yes. the answer is yes.

there is art on the tee shirt in the form of a pleasing design which sometimes has a message.

the color of the shirt and the style and the way it is worn is also artistic.

tee shirt design is a form of art.

i guess it depends if the art utilises the context of the t-shirt.

Is the canvas part of the art when someone paints? The canvas alone is nothing but fabric stretched over a frame. The paint needs someplace to land. The paint and the canvas become one entity, thus creating the piece.

I believe the design printed on the shirt has the same relationship -- the tshirt becomes part of the piece of art. Why should it be considered art any less than the same design on paper or canvas?

don't confuse design with art. it may even be helpfull to start off your project with the definition of both. i am a designer, my friends refer to me as an artist. clearity will show alot about what submissions are art vs design and what clothing is art clothing vs clothing by designers.
