Hi friends,

This is a blog where you post songs whose lyrics or melody speak to you about a particular moment in your life, or your life as a whole, or a moment in space and time... be it positive or negative.

I'll start it off with what I feel is the one song that truly describes how I feel at this very moment:

Would love to see what you guys come up with! Feel free to tie it into a story, if you'd like to share with the class.

I remember the summer after I had just gotten my first job, at the age of 16, slinging pitas in a fast food joint....and I spent many beautiful summer afternoons stuck inside wiping down plastic trays and chopping peppers....and this song had just come out and was often playing on the radio.

It was hard not to be painfully struck by the lyrics "I think my life is passing me by."

Hell, I still feel that way pretty damn often.

I have a handful of songs. They don't really define my life through their lyrics, but they 're essential to how I felt at that time and what my life was like.

Its probably not to everyones taste but my favourite band is four year strong, they released a song called "it must really suck to be four year strong right now" A review site ripped their album to shreds and its a quote from that review, its kind of heavy and kind of pop punk and I love it.

But the lyrics really speak to me:

I'm a mess such a wreck don't forget about it
I drag myself through the dirt just to feel a little closer to the ground
Because I've always had my head up in the clouds

The songs about working hard to achieve your dreams and sticking at it even when it seems like your goal is never going to happen.

Don't fix it if it hasn't broken yet.
Don't regret it if it hasn't happened yet.

But since your head's in the clouds the best advice I found is don't look down.

Well it's the best advice I've found,
DON'T LOOK DOWN!

I guess it's that line from Crazy by Gnarls Barkley "My heroes had the heart to lose their lives out on a limb / and all I remember is thinking 'I want to be like them'"

Remember when it first came out and it got played on the radio so much that it got annoying and if you didn't really listen it was just the chorus "Craaaaazy"? I didn't think it was of much consequence then.

But when I actually listened to the song properly, (which was on a flight to Austria back in the stone age when you couldn't get movies and music on-demand, they just looped the same three videos over and over between movies - the other two were S.O.S. by Rihanna and Who Knew? by P!nk which didn't really speak to me in the same way) and heard that line it was like "Woah. That's me talking."

My whole life my heroes were people like JFK, Martin Luther King, John Lennon, Maximilian Kolbe, Michael Collins, Anne Frank, Hans and Sophie Scholl, Joan of Arc, Abraham Lincoln and lots of others I'm forgetting.

Obviously I don't want to die like them. And I don't even want to be famous, revered, great or a major world figure. I just want to be brave like them. I want to be able to do the right thing because it's right, even though I might die.

And then on the flipside there's the creative heroes, who lose their minds and basically lose their lives as well. Either directly, like Van Gough or you just get lost like Syd Barrett or you shut yourself off all by yourself like JD Salinger as a result of it all. Would I rather be like them?

So I think that line will come to define my life, whether I'm a player or just a spectator in it all. If I can be a hero or just want to be like one, I think it might define me. I hope people can say I was like them though and not just wanted to be.

And I hope one day I can stop asking myself if that makes me crazy.

But I have loads more that tie in to specific times or stories if anyone is interested.

I think when I was a little younger though, like at university, this song pretty much summed me up.

Except it's about a girl.

And except for the bit about taking a bad pill.

A lot of The Whitlams songs are very relevant to me, because they are from Sydney and sing about life here very often to the point that they've been extensively parodied about it. So when someone does some slice of life in Sydney song it's very easy to relate to because you've been at the places they're singing about and you just have the same sensibilities.

I was thinking today about how Sesame Street defined my childhood and maybe from there my whole life. I still remember being about 4 and it taught me the word "cooperate." My dad was blown away when I said it.

My favourite character was always Ernie and my favourite song was "I Don't Want to Live on the Moon." I went and downloaded it yesterday. I thought about it a lot today. It makes me very nostalgic. Sometimes it makes me sad. I don't know if it's because of the sadness in the song or just my own sadness for the fact that my childhood is gone.

I also really loved the Ernie song "Imagine That" which probably contributed a bit to my love of making shit up. And my favourite skecth was always "Here Fishy Fishy Fishy" but that's not a song. And the one where they went to Egypt scared me.

Either way, Jim Henson was a genius.

I think I want to start writing again. Imagine that!

Also, I can still remember my mother teaching me why this one was funny:

So that was my introduction to The Beatles.

Dez, stop pouting, you're pretty much the perfect female human being. If you could produce enough girl juice to manufacture it, you could sell it in bottles and make a greater yearly net profit than Snapple

mgill52 on Dec 03 '09 at 1:31am
Dez, you have a really nice neck. That is a strange compliment.
I'm sorry?

mike bautista on Dec 03 '09 at 2:04am
