There is a very good chance that I will be going to Spain in November as an Au pair (childcare-ish, live with a family) for three months and I'm psyched!

Does anybody have any tips of what I should bring with me, from experience either in spain or doing volunteering/working somehwere in Europe. Or if you have any great suggestions of what I should try to see while I'm there, I wont have a huge budget but I'm sure I can fit in some little adventures here and there. I like quirky/unique and/or nature things more than typical tourist things.

Also I'm thinking of bringing a gift with me as I will be there over Christmas to give to the family or kids, hopefully something Canadian, but I'm not sure what... so far what I'm thinking is a bottle of "real maple syrup" that I can get at the local farmer's market.

I super excited and would ove any insights or advice you guys have...

and for no reason: the song I'm listening to and loving right now is Don MacLean's Castle in the Air...

Where in Spain?

My husband studies Spain and he's spent a lot of time in Sevilla, Madrid, and Asturias.

I can probably get all sorts of good recommendations from him. :-)

The Alamillo Bridge in Sevilla is beautiful. Actually, Sevilla has several awesome bridges.

Cool, I'll ask him!

... and yeah, Sevilla is just beautiful in general. You should go visit it at some point.

the bridge reminds me of this bridge building game one of my roommates used to have it was for engineers adn you had to solve all these bridge dilemmas, it was an incredibly simply designed game (likely made in the early 90s) buit it was lots of fun and you often had to think of strange bridge solutions

I think it's a 6 hour bus ride, probably a shorter train ride... I can't really remember! Another thing I'll ask my husband about :-)

I've only been to Sevilla, and it was quite magical.

If you're bringing Canadian gifts, I'd bring something very stereotypical. My European relatives only smile and nod when I bring them Canadian music, but fall all over themselves for the stuffed moose dressed like a Mountie.

All about me

I love: BBQ food (including the side-dishes like potato salad), Hermann Hesse books (especially The Glass Bead Game), trees and tree climbing and tree-houses, hide-and-go-seek, the ocean, traveling, hieghts, Douglas Adams books, strangers, sweet potato fries, nacho pizza, having infinite super-powers and jumping on the bed.

"Things had certainly come down a long way since the great days of Faust and Mephistopheles, when a man could gain all the knowledge of the universe, achieve all the ambitions of his mind and all the pleasures of the flesh for the price of his soul. Now it was a few record royalties, a few pieces of trendy furniture, a trinket to stick on your bathroom wall and, whap, your head comes off." - Douglas Adams
