I'm thinking of buying some t-shirts during this sale.

$15 x 2 shirts = $30, which is coming to about 17.9432 GBP according to today's exchange rate.

Anything over 18 GBP is liable for a UK Customs charge - it doesn't always happen, but it can, and it can be pretty hefty.

I'm thinking of putting through two orders, but I'm a bit nervous, cos all I need is for the bloody exchange rate to shift slightly and I'll get a pretty eyewatering charge.

What do you think?

Hurry up and adopt the Euro already. Or move to Ireland, whatever.

I thought it was over £30 that they charged??
that's what i've worked on anyway - recently bought $36 worth of shirt and didn't get charged, but I know you don't always get nabbed so maybe i just got lucky.
there's a UK threadless users blog about - you'll get more info in there

John: Shhhh! Talk like that will get you killed! :)

digsy: I'm almost 100% sure it's £18. And I've never been charged either. And I don't want to start!

james: How much was your order?

Edword: The pound has been improving slowly, but it's still a far cry from the previous $2 to the pound last year. Man, I miss those days.

i'm not totally sure on this, but if you get it sent through UPS, while it's more expensive, they just demand COD. if you get it through normal mail the post office charge a handling fee of a fiver or something like that.

i posted this morning in angelito's blog wondering if say you bought two shirts and sent them to someone in the US, and they then repackaged them in just a jiffy bag or something and then posted that whether customs would get it. i don't think they would. obviously you'd need someone in the US to help you out - maybe buy them a tee for their trouble

GBP exchange rate has been going down. Custom charges are pretty much buggers. Some sites seem to avoid them, others don't.
