I have a project where I need to advertise a 'fringe festival'.
Fringe: on the edge, not part of the mainstream, alternativem, not conservative, unconventional.

My topic is 'edible at ikea', or 'fringe edibles festival'. Imagine yourself at ikea, but finding out that the furniture is not, in fact, furniture, but delicious edible yumminess...

But how do I change your perceptions of a chair?

I am so stuck :|

specific foods + pieces of furniture share the same traits...

'comfort food' + 'comfy' chair

comfortable, warm, over-sized, heavy, simple, etc.

Or gingerbread. A gingerbread chair could be fun to build.

that's an interesting way to look at it, I'll play around with that!

how functional/realistic does this piece of furniture need to be?
coffeecandle
coffeecandle on Aug 15 '11 at 8:00pm
well it would be a piece of advertising for it, rather than the actual chair.
I kind of always imagined it to actually look like a real chair, and have a kind of 'wait.. what? that's made out of food? that's crazy!' reaction.

originally I was going to make a julia child+ikea lovechild recipecard, but that didn't work out. I'm now considering taking a more literal approach and just photographing someone eating a chair or something.

chair made of mashed potato.

I think I'm going more towards a direction where I'll use a photo of a chair (or take one), so it's not the appearance of said chair that I'm changing, but the audiences perception of it, which is probably harder.

What about beavers eating their own table? Or something.
aNonnymouse
aNonnymouse on Aug 15 '11 at 8:07pm
Oh. Photography. I guess the beaver thing could be photochopped.

this would be pretty simple to do and photograph, but you could go crazy with the scene...

sugar cubes stacked to make an entire living room set.
you could paint the cubes with that cake decorating jelly stuff.

You could try to mimic the setting and composition of the photo to look like a decorated dish, something like this:

Something that reminds the viewer of taste and food mixed with furniture.

The hard part is that I have a week to do it.
This is stressing me out! Waiting to talk to my lecturer now...

Building a miniature living room out of sugar cubes or pretzels or something sounds like a cool idea.

When I was a little kid, my friends and I used to play "candy land" on the playground and would go around trying to eat all the playground equipment. One area was the lollipop forest, one was a gingerbread castle, etc. If you don't have to worry about the copyright, you could maybe lay down a colored path, have a deck of candyland movement cards, and play your way through the store.

Maybe pasting a nutrition chart, like with servings and what not. Its simple and fast to do. Good luck.

I like the idea of a family sitting around a table, knives and forks poised, but with a completely empty table, no food, plates or table mats, just the people and the cutlery. A dinner table dinner.
A pretty interesting project.

Yeah my thought was a 1920-s looking dinner setting, but considering it's due on Friday (we had a whole week and a half to do this, condensed much) David told me to stop making things complicated for myself. I'll post what I've been doing in a sec. Thanks again for all the feedback :)

People ususally sit down a t a table to eat but will not reach down and grab a chunk of chair to eat ( especially the part they are sitting on or a leg since it might cause them to fall ) I would focus on the armrest of the chair being edible, that way you can sit and enjoy the chair without too much worries.

A menu might be nice with some punny dishes on it. Spaghetti Carpet Armchair (carbonara), I'm sure there are a billion of similar puns.
