My patterns keep on being off by a millimeter or something

and it is literally driving me nutso.

see, this looks fine on screen... but then when I print it it's got these white lines all through it... and Illustrator crashed without saving the file so I'm going to have to start from scratch, and I really can't be bothered (I should really save my stuff more often hey).

For some reason when I try to turn this into a pattern:

(when I'm actually selecting the repeating tile and everything)
it keeps on deleting the yellow things in the backrgound, and I have no idea why. I flattened the image, grouped it, tried random stuff, and it's just not working.

Any idea why?

are you making proper pattern swatches in illustrator?

and the one time it didn't do it, it didn't match up properly.

I'm definately trying, the problem seems to be that I'm not choosing the tile precisely enough or something with the artichoke pattern.

hm. well when I make patterns I always crop the final artwork using the pathfinder and then use that as a test to see if it tiles correctly before making it a swatch. snap to point is essential here.

best way of making sure nothing disappears from your artwork is:

expand, group, merge, expand, crop, expand

(but you won't have to 'expand' every time if you are using the pathfinder buttons rather than going through the menus)

that did it Dan, thanks so much! I think it's the merging which I didn't do before that made the difference :) now up to the next one... sigh!

thanks derek! The yellow one is a recreation from an original Art Nouveau pattern (unfortunately I had to, I wish I could take the credit for it, haha), the others are based on Art Nouveau, but my own designs :)
