Serious Question...

What do you tell an 11-13 year old who talks about suicide and doing drugs?

I know a lot of it is for attention, but I still have to do something about it since she seems to have adopted me as her older person to talk to.

I was suicidal at her age, and, thinking back, I can't think of anything anyone could have said to me to make me feel better.

Ugh. Help?

say that you've been there, and know how difficult it felt, but that it gets better. tell them they're definitely not alone and can pull through it, but you'll be there for support when they need it.

But in seriousness, I don't really know how to help, other than talk to him or get him to a counselor. Sorry I can't offer any more help :/ and I hope things get better.

Yeah, pretty much all you can say is that it will get better and that you really do understand and that you'll always be there for them when they need it.
And if you really don't know what to do or say, maybe you could try calling the suicide hotline for some advice of what to do.

Personally, I've never been in that situation, but a friend of mine committed suicide back in May of this year and it was rough to say the least. Especially having to deal with the guilt afterwards since I and most of my friends had no idea he was even depressed. Suicide sucks and while it is pretty selfish to do, I do see how one may see it as their only option. Just be sure to always be there for her and always look for signs of increased depression. I know I wish I had done that and been a better friend.

Just be there for her. Listen to her. Tell her your own experiences if it helps.

I was often depressed and even suicidal around that age. Things got better over time.

Encourage them to check with a doctor, there might be a biological component to what they're feeling. Not that I'm for medicating the young, their brains aren't set in stone yet. Exercise and art-making are also really powerful anti-depressants. Just some thoughts.

I don't even like the kid, she's a spoiled little brat. But I can't just turn her away with her apparently coming to me for advice.

It just sucks 'cause I was the one who fixed myself when I was in her position, but I know that's not the answer for everyone

unfortunately most teenagers seem like they can't be told anything and have to realise shit for themselves. i guess you can only listen. having someone to vent to makes a big difference. i don't envy you the job though.
