From my observation, it seems that those who are the harshest critics of designs in the running have not even submitted any designs themselves.

I'm not saying that because they don't submit designs that they don't know HOW to design or that they don't know what good design IS, I just find it slightly hypocritical.

If we're all here to exchange ideas about technique, creativity, etc., why can't everyone provide constructive feedback?

I mean, being mean isn't going to get anyone anywhere, right? Unless you're out to put people down to make yourself look better. If so, that's just not cool.

Things like that REALLY annoy me

Here's a blog where someone was doing that:

I've never submitted a design ever, but I don't believe that I've ever bashed a design like some people do...

Well, it could appear to be that way, but there's probably more to it. I'm guessing quite a bit bigger percentage of people with accounts on threadless have no designs than those who have submitted at least one design. Assuming that is true, it would be more likely that the critical people would belong to the group who have not submitted. Your thinking could still be correct though.

Yikes! People who don't submit designs give great constructive criticism too!!!

I'm just saying the just flat-out MEAN criticisms usually come from people who don't design.

Sorry I didn't make that clear... :-\

i think most of times mean comments from no-subbers are more a "who's not able to do, teaches" attitude...but i may be wrong.

i didn't see so much angry comments from non-subbers on my design, so it's just an opinion and not bitching against anyone.
i don't want to be misunderstood

I rather see a shitty sub than read a shit comment.
I have no idea why some people take the time to make flat out mean comments.

re: isnt it good to know what your audience like and dont like?

yes, but I see a lot of comments that have no validity what-so-ever. I think a person could elaborate instead of just saying "boring" "wtf is this shit!" "you work sucks" etc etc.... cheeky one liners do usually come from ppl ho have no regard for what it takes to actually try and submit something. I've been on here a while and I can tell it it's a fact.

There has only been one submitter I can think of that had a foul attidtude toward others, KILLERLAMB. That guy was a complete moron... I sincerely believe there was a reason for his "mentality" though. Look at the comments on his last sub, that is entirely due to his fucked up attitude and he deserved the response he got.

So I agree with you 100%, katiegraphic. It'll always be like this and it always has been like this.

There are definitely more positive reponses more often than not though, but all it takes is one jackass to ruin your idea or the integrity of your design.
