I was wonderin if this has anything to do with the abandoned city of Chernobyl in Ukraine. For some reason that's the first thing I thought of when I saw this design. The design itself is badass.

It's based on a number of things:

The obvious Chernobyl nuclear disaster (the Chernobyl plant, and a certain famous location from Pripyat can be seen on the design itself).

The title comes from an EXCELLENT cult political sci-fi novella from '72, with a Zone eerily similar to the real Zone that would appear years later in '86 (but left by aliens stopping by to have a 'roadside picnic' rather than nuclear leakage), written by the Russian bros., Arkady and Boris Strugatsky.

Probably the Tarkovsky '79 adaptation of the novella.

And also probably (judging from the soldier and monster) the PC game S.T.A.L.K.E.R. from a few years ago, mixing together the Chernobyl incident with Roadside Picnic and the gravitational anomalies and zombies (hinted at), et cetera, from the book.

The fact that I very much understand this design makes me act all proud for no logical reason and want it.

REPRINT IT, NAO!
