Hey.

So, I want to get a laptop for colleges (I like to pluralize it, because I can).

1. Not a mac
2. So I'm thinking either a Dell or a Fujitsu. I'm leaning towards the Fujitsu because it has a kick-ass name, and seems to be a pretty reliable brand from what I've read. Dell has a wider selection, though, and I get like a $2 discount through OSU. YAY! haha.

I'll be using it for the internets and maybe movies sometimes, and typing stuff. I will probably take my desktop as well, because I don't feel like dealing with photo editing and crap with a smaller screen, and getting photoshorps onto it.

Advice, or whatever, is nice.
And yes, I know there are probably better audiences on other forums (for this type of query), but I don't care.

Hmm, I've never heard of Fujitsu before. I own an HP Pavilion, which I adore. The extent of my knowledge about Dell is that I live by the factory, but some of my friends have Dells, and say it's an ok computer.
Sorry to be of no help ever!

No worries. My dad has a gigantic HP laptop "notebook" that has like a 2 minute battery life. It's awesome.

I think Dell has some offices or something in OKC. Maybe.

Ahahaha, two minute battery life is about right. I'll have my computer unplugged for a little bit, and I'll glance at the levels and my computer is like, floundering for life.

Is graphic design on a macbook much cop, tesc? My housemate says an iMac is effectively the same thing just without the portability and other benefits.

oJimo- Has experience taught you that, or is it what you've heard? (Just wondering)

I know some people with Dells who have no problem with them... however the fact that newegg doesn't sell them strikes me as weird.

Sorry for blog-jacking, hanza.

I have no idea what to get. Get a fujitsu. They make appliances over here in blighty. I'm sure they're great.

I know 5 (or maybe more) people that have had Dell's and they nothing but problems. My sister in-law's spent more time getting repairs then it did in her hands and customer service was a nightmare for her. I'm not saying that it happens to everyone; but it could happen to you.

Ooh, that looks awesome! I think I looked at the designer ones, but they were sooo 'spensive. (congrats!)

Then again, Fujitsus aren't the cheapest... but my dad doesn't have to know that.

The quality of Dell's customer service highly depends on where you live. AFAIR Dell has no own offices but partner agencies who care about repairing the computers.

Some friends of mine have a Fujitsu and are very happy. But as long as you stick to a known brand you're not completely wrong. You should just mind some main details, like no reflective display, how long does the battery last, a compromise between weight/size and features and so on...

Google your favourite models, not every model/line is as good/bad as its relative. Try to find some test reports in online computer mags and comments of customers.

Dell is the generic laptop. It's pretty reliable, assuming you don't load it down with excessive programs or drop it repeatedly or do any of the things my roommate does to/with his Dell.

Customer service is varied (pretty bad for the most part), but you should usually be able to fix most software-related problems on your own.

And laptop batteries last longer if you unplug them when you're not using them. I usually take mine out when I'm connected to AC power (which is actually all the time).

I have a HP Pavillion and it's pretty good. Vista isn't quite as bad as people make it out to be so don't be scurred.

Battery life leaves something to be desired but everything else is great. The customer service is good too. They gave me a new power cord when mine got... shitty.
