I am not a man! update.
I got a funny letter today.
what was this funny letter, you ask? well! it was a letter informing me that I have been automatically signed up for the draft, as is customary in the US for boys after they turn 18.

lovely! wait...this just in! I am not a boy!

I checked out my driver's license and somehow the DMV managed to put the wrong gender on my card. To the United States of America, I am a man.

update: I went and got a new driver's license on thursday. I am now a female again. They had me take a new picture and it looks like a mug shot. I need to call Selective Services on monday so they take me off the draft list.


also, I don't know why it took so long for them to sign me up--I turned 18 in May!

It never completely went away, just nobody's been drafted since.

Actually, the last draft was for Vietnam. Nixon ended conscription and the last person to be registered into Selective Services was in 1972.
The started having people register with Selective Services again in 1980, but they are pretty lax with the regulation/fines of getting into the system which is why many guys who turn 18 get put into the draft pretty late, or sometimes not at all.
